Routes / NC to MI

Hi,
I'm planning a trip from Carrboro, NC to Ann Arbor MI. I'm from Australia and have never been to America. Any tips on routes or where to get maps so that I can plan a route would be appreciated. Also any general information about cycling in the states ie how bicycle frienly the traffic is?
