Classifieds / Small touring bike wanted

Thanks for the advice, Mark of the Dalton boys. I am using the flag, for sure. I prefer being seen to not! And I've read the manual. Still, reading is one thing. Experience is better.Two more weeks and I'll be off for a week of riding with BOB, probably about 500 miles. I better be ready by then.

Thanks again for the advice and encouragement you pass on by your enthusiasm.

Hey, I don't need that small touring bike anymore..... I've gone with a BOB trailer than I can use on the bike I already have. And I am liking BOB very much. We're becoming good friends. I even talk to him on hills sometimes..... is that a little odd?? :-) He slows me down but he has everything I need.

person wants to keep her bike and continue to ride!

Good luck! I wish I knew someone who'd done this and could advise you. Still, it seems to me that you'd want to keep the guitar fully protected and I think a trailer would be the preferred choice. Use a good waterproof bag and you won't have to worry about moisture. Don't know how rough roads would affect the tuning? I know the BOB Yak trailer has a shock, as it's made for off-roads travels. Might be the way for you to go.

Check out the Surly website

Look under frames for the Surly Long Haul Trucker. A good range of sizes! And you can go with 26 in. tires, so standover height should not be a problem. Only thing is, it's a frame, not a complete bike. You have to choose components/parts and have it built. Not sure if Surly will do that or not..... but you can find out through their site. If I could choose any bike I want right now, that's what I'd choose. Good luck! Hope you find exactly what you are looking for.

To whoever asked about the Sierra Designs Electron tent I mentioned.......... I can't really answer your questions about how it holds up in rain. Haven't had it out in any bad weather yet. It's got a bathtub floor. Came with a footprint. I've seam-sealed all the seams. I am hoping  for the best. As for humid conditions, it does well if you leave the vestibules slightly open.

How lightweight and what size tent are you looking for? Freestanding or not? I just bought a Sierra Designs 2-person Electron tent. I've used it twice now and it rocks!!!! I am totally happy with it. Lightweight (less than 6 lbs.), easy set-up. Room for two people. PLENTY of room for one! I am carrying it in my BOB trailer, but you could fit it on the back rack of a touring bike. Poles are not short enough to fit in panniers. There are so many good tents out there. Decide what your requirements are and look around till you find one that meets them.

I didn't have the wobble with panniers.... not after I got used to them.

I've been working with BOB, trying to get the wobble under control. It's getting better. I can stand on climbs for a short period now. I'll keep working on it. I'm pretty determined. BOB is my friend, now, and we'll get in sync eventually.

Thanks, NIck, for the comments. I tried the aerobars on a longer ride last weekend and it was fine. Nice to have another position to ride in and to be able to relax my hands.

How about this question.......... Should you be able to stand while going up a hill? I can't. I've tried, but I immediately get a bad wobble from the BOB. I'm pulling it with a road bike with 23cc tires on it. Do you think slightly wider tires would make any difference? The bike is a 48 cm. frame and fairly lightweight. I am not a large person so there's not very much weight on the bike. Still.......... I weigh more than the trailer!
Any advice??

Here's another question.... good idea or bad idea to use aerobars when pulling a BOB? I am guessing NOT. But have been afraid to try. I've got aeros on the BOB bike. Right now they are being used as a great light and computer mounting area. I like the way my light shines down onto the road from the front of the aerobars.

Thank you both for the replies! I've done some rearranging of loads, keeping your advice in mind. It seems to have helped. Still, I think I'll keep the downhill speed under 35! I don't need to break any records! My BOB is a used one so I didn't get any owners manual with it nor a flag. I wondered if maybe I should rig something. I want to be visible, having had close encounters with large four-wheeled vehicles. I will definitely check out bobtrailers.com. It should be interesting reading.

If this has already been discussed, apologizes right now. But I couldn't find it, so here goes........ Went for a weekend overnight bike trip - took the BOB trailer loaded with my camping gear, etc. Fought major headwinds of 35-40 sustained with gusts up to 50 mph. Fine. I survived that. The next day, on the return trip, had tailwinds! Yeah! Hit rather high speeds and noticed a definite wobble/shimmy in the trailer. Over 30-35 mph, it wasn't tracking well. Do I have it loaded incorrectly? Is something not tightened down? Or is it an inherent quality of the trailer? If so, I'll get used to it. I simply need to know. Thanks in advance for any answers.
