Pam, I've wondered the same thing. Have you found any ideas since your posting several weeks ago?

Gear Talk / tent and pad help

If you have an REI store nearby, talk to someone in the tent/sleeping bag/pad dept. They are very knowledgeable and have good stuff.

Gear Talk / Anyone name their bike?
« on: August 31, 2004, 01:09:31 am »
Rocinante, the name of Don Quixote's horse.  My wife had name decals made for the bike just before my cross country trip this summer.  I took a few pictures of the bike in front of wind farm generators at 2 or 3 spots along the route. Told me something about the area I was in!

I suggest you write to Serge at Arkel: info@arkel-od.com  He is very knowledgable and will give it to you straight.  I have a full set of their bags and they are top quality.

Roads are generally fine. In Ohio you will have long paved bike paths. Beware of loose dogs in Kentucky. I had lots of rain this past July from Cincinnati to Owen Sound.

Routes / baja
« on: December 01, 2008, 12:28:54 am »
There has been a lot of brutal violence, robberies, kidnappings, etc., in Baja for many months now, much, but not all, of it directed against rival drug cartel members as they try to gain control of the territory.  I would strongly advise against riding there.

Routes / Leaving bike with panniers outside
« on: August 29, 2005, 07:43:41 pm »
I suggest you use at least a 2 person tent which will give you extra room to store your bags in. With the tent closed up, I have been comfortable with leaving the bags while I took a hike (especially if you at not at an isolated site) and at night. But I would take valuables, such as wallet, camera, cell phone with me.

Routes / CycleAmerica coast to coast?
« on: January 07, 2004, 03:20:04 pm »
I am thinking about signing up with Cycle America for this summer's coast to coast trip. Comments from past riders (routes, food, support, daily distances/elevation gains, etc.) would be appreciated.

General Discussion / What Touring bike would you suggest?
« on: November 11, 2008, 01:26:44 am »
Insurance : Read the fine print. Most insurance (as well as the airline or any freight company such as FedEx, even if you declare a higher value and pay extra) will only pay the depreciated value of the used item that was lost, stolen or damaged. This is true even if you have declared a higher value when applying for the insurance and paid the higher premium. And if there is a loss, you have to prove in some manner what that used value is. I would be most interested in knowing if anyone has found new "replacement value" insurance for a shipped bicycle.

If you are not going to br using the bikes on the return trip, I suggest you ship them home by FedEx Ground and avoid the hassle.

General Discussion / Shipping the bike when trip is over!
« on: March 02, 2008, 06:15:08 pm »
FedEx Ground is usually cheaper than UPS. I suggest you contact Bike Gallery (6 stores in Portland area) and have them box and ship for you. http://www.bikegallery.com/PROD-pickup.php
They will get a commercial shipping rate. If they ship to your LBS rather than your residence address, you will also save. Good luck.

Riders, I don't recall seeing such an article in the mag. Did you know that you can find some articles on the website at http://www.adventurecycling.org/library/index.cfm

General Discussion / Seeing in the rain
« on: June 01, 2007, 01:30:12 am »
When it is raining, I wear an old baseball cap under my helmet. keeps the rain out of my eyes. Also, velcroed Sidekick booties for my feet are a real plus.
