General Discussion / Tree Fort Bikes/ Good company

Gotta give a shout out to this company. I purchased a salsa fargo from them some time ago without inspecting it. Long after the warranty was expired I set it up to find out it had 2 major parts that were damaged which made the bike unable to be ridden. I wrote them about it and they promptly sent me the new parts, no cost. Thats a company that prides itself on customer satisfaction. Im very impressed.

It will be interesting to see how your bike ride compares to your AT thru hike. My friend told me the AT was much tougher than his cross country bicycle trip.

Tom,outside of washing my bike off once on the GAP/Towpath I didnt really worry about getting the bike clean until I got home. After I got home I then took the chain off and cleaned all the grit, dirt, grease off of it, the cogs, derailler, etc. I just use this stuff from walmart in the sporting goods section called White lightening EASY LUBE. they have one for dry dusty riding and one for wet. It seems to work pretty well. Also incase you havent found it yet, theres a really good site called BIKECANDO.COM on the net. This is really well put together for all you need to know about the trail. Have fun!

Gear Talk / Re: tent for transam

I learned the hard way about tents. I bought a cheap walmart tent, even sprayed with it silicone but it couldnt hold out the big rain one night and I was soaked inside and out. With tents lighter equals more $$. Had I had a tarp I could have set it up as a 2nd fly and probably been ok. I guess it just depends on how much money you want to spend . Ive watched eBay but a good lightly used tent gets pretty competitive with the bidding.

You could just keep your old tent and purchase a lightweight tarp and set it up only if it rains. equinox makes some light ones.

I just buy the stuff at Walmart. I believe I bought one for wet type riding and for for dry. I did the GAP/C&O towpath this year and it was a blast.. Ran into big rain but was at Husky Haven campground in Rockwood and they had an outside sprayer for your bike. Enjoy your ride and if you have time for some mindless entertainment I videotaped my trip and you can see how it went if it you want. Just find Hondo smith youtube. safe travels.

Gear Talk / 29er vs 26
« on: September 27, 2012, 08:49:08 am »
Was wondering if my 29er 32 spoked wheels are as strong as my old bike with 26inch wheels. Cant remember the # of spkokes. Maybe 36. Ive loaded the 26 up with full panniers many times and they havent failed me yet. The # of spokes and larger wheel size just has me wondering if the difference is  something to think about as far as the weight limit it can handle. Thanks.

I did both the Skyline and BRP. . Its a grind. You will learn to hate the word GAP. It just means you reached the bottom and will shortly be  climbing again. I  loved it! It should be on every cyclists bucket list.

Gear Talk / Chain repair
« on: September 06, 2012, 02:24:56 pm »
Novice question: I have a 9 speed shimano cassett. If my chain breaks can I replace that link with a master link or do I need a replacement link ? Any special specs? 3/32 ?  Advice welcomed.

If you are talking about staying on the strip which is about 4 miles from the airport, I have stayed a few times at Circus Circus. I stayed there last october on a monday for $45 however dont expect that if you arrive on a weekend.

Besides a helmet, its the next closest thing that "will save your life". Dont leave home without it!

If Im in bear country I carry it whether its a day hike, camping trip, whatever. I feel better with it, it doesnt weigh that much and I feel Im worth the $50 it costs. Maybe Tim Treadwell and his girlfriend would be alive today had he had a can with him.Just my 2 cents worth.

Dave, "threewheeljourney" guy on youtube rode his bicycle around the usa and if you look I believe you will find one of his videos where he did the cowboy trail. He posted 108 videos and they are excellent.
