Gear Talk / GEARING CONCERNS
« on: July 10, 2006, 09:14:56 am »
What I think happened is my Burley Hudson is a closeout 2005 with the 52/42/30 and the dealer quoted me the 2006 48/36/26 specs. Im just hoping I can get by with only the chainring changeout. If I end up having to change out anything else I just nulified the good deal I got on this bike.

Im going to have to pick the brains of my LBS about the chainring combination options i have for this bike. i have the 9 cluster cog on the back but I dont have the specs on the specific ratios in front of me. so far what Im seeing billed as a good triple chainring combo is the 48/38/26 or even 48/38/24/. Hopefully one of these combinations will work on my bike and it will be plenty low enough. I will give up speed anyday for lower gears. I live in the appalachians and Im either going up or down, not much inbetween and my goal is to do the transamerica sometime in the near future.thanks for the info.

After 20 years on a converted mt. bike with 45/32/22 chainrings i purchsed a burley hudson 52/42/30. I live in the mountains and this gearing is way too high. Im a mechanical invalid and need help figuring out how to lower this gearing substantially. I need low gears and I mean LOW gears! Can I get by with a changeout of the triple chainrings? If so what size? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Im as yet undecided if Im going to transfer the ACA gps waypoints to my Garmin once I get it figured out. Not sure if I want to be that dependent on it vs. using it as my backup and maybe making my own waypoints day to day with the ability to go off route and not worry too much about it.I will be carrying the paper maps also. great forum. Its been a ton of help.

I just purchsed the garmin 60CX with Mapsource CD. I also bought the pre-programmed city select north ameria chip. Question: Since I have the pre-programmed city select card do I have to (able to) download the mapsource onto it or do I download mapsource onto the 64mb chip that is already in the unit then have to swap it out when I need to use city select navigation. .Im wanting to be able to download the transam waypoints and also be able to get off route and navigate using the city select but the two cards are confusing me.

Routes / Help: Route from Wash, D.C. to Charlottesville, VA
« on: August 06, 2008, 10:12:23 am »
If you want one of the best rides in the Eastern U.S. and your destination is Charlottesville Va. then by all means get to Front Royal Va. and ride the Skyline drive (105mi.) to Waynesboro. I believe its about 80 miles from DC to Front Royal then about 30mi. from Waynesboro to Charlottesville.Maybe not as direct as you would like but the scenery will make up for it.

Routes / BRP CLOSURE
« on: March 27, 2008, 10:26:14 am »
Looks like the blueridge parkway has a closure at the Craggy Gardens area approx mi. marker 370 so anyone planning to ride needs to watch that. Sounds like it will be closed most, possibly all of 2008.Dont know what the bypass will involve, hopefully not much.

Routes / Rt 39 in WVa
« on: July 22, 2007, 09:09:57 am »
Follow Rt.39 30 miles East past Richwood and you will come to a road junction 39/219.Thats Millpoint and if you look off to the right you will see the old mill.Stay on 39/219 (veers to the left) and that will take you into Buckeye.Theres a hotel there.I think you would like doing the 4 miles to Marlinton via the greenbrier river trail. You can pick it up from Buckeye. If you are worried about running into trouble you can email me and I will give you a couple #s to call.

Summersville to Marllinton will be a good workout. No services from Richwood until Buckeye (33mi.)Kennison Mt.3988ft.coming out of Richwood.Camping opportunities all along this section.A visitor center (water)before descending into Millpoint where 39/219 join before splitting at Marlinton. If you want you can take "old buckeye rd",a right before the gas station in buckeye, go across the blue bridge and take a left (north) onto the greenbrier river trail (4 mi.) into Marlinton which joins back up to 39.its hard packed rock but a road bike could handle that much. The rest is just to follow 39.Have fun.

I live along Rt. 39 near the monongahela national forest between Richwood and Marlinton (hillsboro) and bicycle all over this area. Its rugged and scenic however like most of wva it has very little shoulder and logging trucks to deal with, however if this doesnt bother you too much I think you would be ok.If you need help getting through this area I would gladly help you, just let me know.

Thanks for the info Mary. I hope my ride on the alcan doesnt end up being a two wheel version of "Ice Road Truckers" on the Hisory channel.

Anybody bicycled Nova Scotia? If so how would you evaluate it as a bicycling trip. Is it a must do? What time frame would be needed. Climate.Terrain.Best time to go. I know I can get all this from books/maps but I would appreciate a firsthand account. Thanks.
