If/while you're looking for a bike, keep eye on ebay.  I see good/great deals all the time.

You've discovered this forum.  It's great resource.  CGOAB is another resource that will pay dividends . . . obviously the journals, but the articles and reviews are useful too.

Your research will yield many versions of the "I took too much stuff" comment.  My experience was . . . they're correct!  :-)

You'll also read lotsa "what a wonderful time/adventure" comments.  Again, my experience was . . . they're doubly correct!!

Good luck.

I'm in W Yellowstone.  Was planning a few days in Yellowstone, then exit park @ NE entrance, ride to Cooke City, then over Beartooth, down to Red Lodge, up 78 to Columbus, and then continue my xcountry on L&C.

But Beartooth Hwy is AGAIN closed due to rock/mudslide and opening uncertain.

Looks like best option is to ride up US 191 to Bozeman and continue on L&C from there.

What say ye?

Thanks!
Michael

General Discussion / Re: Getting a Bike to where you are going
« on: May 29, 2011, 11:39:00 am »

Amtrak is another very low cost option.  You can purchase an Amtrak box for something like $12.  It’s big and requires very little disassembly of the bike.  I believe the fee for the actual shipping (if you are a train passenger) is only $15.  The limitation with Amtrak is that, unless there is roll-on roll-off bike service, which is available  on only a very limited number of routes, you can only check bikes as baggage between stations that offer checked baggage service.  Such stations are often limited on many/most routes.)  Not sure if you can still ship via Amtrak if you will not be riding the train.  I know you used to be able to.  Check Amtrak’s web site for details.

Yes, ya can ship via Amtrak if you will not be riding the train.  Cost is bit higher than if you are also a passenger, but still far below airlines. About $40.  Check Amtrak's website.

General Discussion / Re: High Visibility - Always Good or Not?

Thanks for the feedback!

With this, I believe I'll be going with my original desire for a "Blacktacular" Surly LHT with red Ortlieb panniers.  I'll also look into getting one of those high visibility yellow/orange triangles to cover my bike's rear-end.   ;)
!

Gear Talk / new OFF product
« on: May 11, 2011, 05:33:32 pm »
OFF has new insect repellent product.

Don't have to spray it on yourself.  Repellent is in a container that you clip to your clothing and a "cloud" of repellency is maintained around ya.

Anyone tried?

Thanks to all for taking the time to provide the feedback.

I'm taking some cook gear, but less than originally packed.

If I find not using it then USPS will get some of my business.
