Gear Talk / touring shoes
« on: November 11, 2005, 08:23:43 pm »
I am relative new to touring but not to cycling.  My issue this time is touring shoes.  I have some mt. bike shoes with spd cleates but there is got to be something a little better when these. What is are you seasoned tourers wearing?

I bought a camping skillet from Coleman and was ready to cook up a storm until I used it and then started scrapping non-stick off of dinner. Anyone have any suggestion on cookware that I don't have to worry about sanding my dinner down.

I am going there this May with my bride of 30 years to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Living a mixed marriage (cyclist, non cyclist) I know I can only do some short day rides.  We will be staying in the Jaco area, any of you world travelers have any suggestions of places to ride in that area?

General Discussion / train travel with BOB the trailer

I am planning a ride down the Washington coast to Oregon this spring.  I have decided to take a train to my start point.  It seems like I can take my bicycle on the train with me but looks like I will have to check BOB in. I am wondering what precaution I should take in transporting BOB.

Bicyclist hit by car.  I have read this many times and have shaken my head.  I never thought I would be one of these riders, until today at about 5:15am and a car came out from a side street of SW 7th st.   in Renton.  I was able to turn somewhat and not get t-boned however my side caught his left side view mirror and it is now lying on the street. I have some sore ribs and a couple of scrapes.  While I was in the emergency room making sure everything was still intact I read the article about unfriendly roads for cyclist in the King County Journal, what timing.  I also wondered if I had done something wrong.  I had bright clothing on a bright head light and the street is fairly well lit.  No, I was legal.  The motorist stop long enough to see if I was alright I said no, he put his broken mirror on the side of the road, and left.   I finally called the police who said there wasnt much they could do, it seem while I was on the ground I couldnt get a license number.
Having ridden a bicycle for a while I have always known, in the back of my mind that the possibility of being hit is always there, just not today.

General Discussion / first tour 2006

Well Friday will be my first tour for the year.  I'll be going with a group from the Vancouver BC bicycle club.  Doing a four day trip to the Gulf Islands, Pender and Salt Spring islands.  Forcast is for rain but around here and this time of year you don't expect anything else. Have packed and repacked about 4 times, so I think I might be ready only tour will tell.  So I'm going to try to keep the rubber side down and ride in between the rain drops.

This weekend I loaded my BoB with my camping gear and set off for 30 mile ride just see how to pack and strap things on my bike.  All went well until a hill I started climbing.  I down shifted to my low chain ring and the chain went right over it. I found out I don't balance very well with my feet clipped in.  I also became knowledgable of ditches and the water that runs in them.  Unclipping myself and righting my bike and trailer and mustering up what little dignity I had, I was on my way to finish my ride.  My bike is on my work stand for some adjustment.  I would like to note that everything that was strapped or bungeed stayed where it was suppose to.  For other new adventure cyclist I suggest you try packing and riding and oh yea, stay out of the ditches.

Not to much discussion about this.  I made one up trying to think what minor things could go wrong from eye wash to upset stomach.  Any other ideas?
