Gear Talk / Best Tires for Mixture of Road & Rail Trails
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:30:45 pm »
I agree with using Schwalbe tires I have ridden the John Wayne trail here in Washington State  which is hard pack as well as riding on road and the tires worked great. They gave a comfortable ride on both surfaces.  Enjoy your ride.

Gear Talk / Touring Bike HELP!!
« on: August 28, 2007, 02:57:14 pm »
Take a look at the Cannondale T2000 or T800. I have had my T2000 for 7 years now and it is still riding strong. I use a BoB trailer with mine and have done road as well as hardpack trails with no problems.  The only issue I have with the Trek 520 are the bar end shifters but that is just an issue with me.  Hope this helps.

Gear Talk / self sealing innertubes
« on: April 29, 2007, 11:28:24 pm »
One of the problems with them is if you get a puncture and the nail or glass stays in the tire.  The seal may stop the leak until the the offending piece of debris punctures the tube again.  Buy good tires.

Gear Talk / tools

What tools do you carry on tour to work on your bike? I followed one list and it weighed about 5 lbs. just for them. I don't want to take to many but I don't want to be stuck because I left my adjustable wrench home.

razor I bought a Fuji A360 for a $149. at Wal-Mart and have had great success with it.  I evan won a 2nd place in a photo contest at the Seattle bike expo.  I have had it on many trips including a trip to Costa Rica and it keeps on working.  I have even taken video with it and was very surpised how well they came out. It is very simple to use.  Hope this might help.

If you are really into photography I think you can justify whatever camera you buy.  I entered a photo contest at Bike expo here in Seattle and won a second place ribbon using a Fuji digital which cost me $100 new. The most important issue is the memories they preserve.

Gear Talk / Trek R200
« on: December 24, 2006, 01:39:20 am »
A couple of years ago my wife bought this recumbent with good intentions but alas it has become a dust collector.  Though I am somewhat a traditionalist when it come to bikes I keep looking at it and wonder if I should give it a spin. I'm in my bicycle maintenace mode this time of year and it bothers me to see this noble steed just sit.  The 40 some gears it has facinates me and I think I'd like to see what it is like going up a hill. Anyone else have this Trek?

I have had my t2000 for 6 years and it has been and is the most comfortable bike I own.  I have log about 20,000 miles on it and it is still my favorite.

This has been more then likely brought up before but does anyone out there use them.  I'm thinking about building a wheel with one and would like to know how they perform? Shimano looks like a good unit.

I had a similar set up and was able to drop all three chain rings from 52/42/30 to 48/39/24 with out replacing the crank set. It seems to works well with me towing a BOB.  I found the 24t worked well while I was riding near Mt. Shasta Ca. altitude above 5200 ft.

Gear Talk / cables
« on: September 15, 2006, 11:57:47 pm »
I have a question how many of the riders out there have broken a cable?  I'm not talking about being off road and have a branch or log grab it but actually shifting and have it break. I guess I should include break cables as well. This falls in the category of what spare parts should you carry.
