Gear Talk / touring shoes
« on: November 11, 2005, 08:23:43 pm »
I am relative new to touring but not to cycling.  My issue this time is touring shoes.  I have some mt. bike shoes with spd cleates but there is got to be something a little better when these. What is are you seasoned tourers wearing?

I bought a camping skillet from Coleman and was ready to cook up a storm until I used it and then started scrapping non-stick off of dinner. Anyone have any suggestion on cookware that I don't have to worry about sanding my dinner down.

Gear Talk / Front rack for new T2000?
« on: March 29, 2006, 04:10:39 pm »
Having looked at the new t2000 my 2001 fork looks very different.  I replaced mine with a carbon cyclecross fork and really like it.  However I cannot use front racks with it.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / solar battery chargers

It really depends on what type batteries you are trying to charge.  Regular nicad batteries I think will charge.  The Nickel-metal-hydride won't or least no very well.  You can look on the web sight Battery University and will give you an in depth reasons of why, probably more information then you need. I went to a electronic store the other day and found a small lead acid battery that will charge with a trickle charge and I am giving it some thought for charging a PDA and cell phone. Hope this might help.

General Discussion / Tire width recommendations
« on: January 04, 2008, 11:01:44 pm »
Dave what I have read is the wider the better.  On my Cannondale I can go as wide as 38's I have put 35's on and they seem to work well on the road as well as trails. I drag a BoB trailer so I'm not dealing with bags.  You might want to go over your packing list and see if you lighten your load, 75lbs of stuff seems a little heavy for touring.
