FYI: DEC campgrounds are popular,especially on weekends. Some are very, very popular. Do some homework as to what maybe filled or near filled.

Gear Talk / Drivetrain Advice

My wife's bike has 105 STI shifters and a rear XT derailleur and a 12-34 cassette. I have a XT crank with a 105 front derailleur and dura ace bar end shifter.

Gear Talk / Touring Bikes ($1000 Range)

I too, am a Trek 520 guy. I shopped alot and kept coming back to the Trek. I like the 36 spoke wheels, the mt bike hubs and rear derailleur, but I immeidately change the 105 crank to an XT. If you look at Co-Motion sells for $3000, its got a Mt bike crank.
I was told by a tour operator and serious loaded touring freak that you want a bike to be durable. He says you can't go any where in the world where someone can't weld steel. Aluminum is different. Also, he isn't a fan of STI shifting. Why? if you have cable problems, just tie knot in the cable and bar end or down tube shifters are good to go.
But, buy a bike that you love to ride. You'll figure out how to make it accomdate you.

Routes / North Lakes Route

better late than never . . .
I was on the Lakes portion from Gulliver MI (72 miles from Mackinac Bridge) to Ludington.
As said US 2 in the UP has an extremely wide shoulder. Lots of convience stores 10-15 miles apart. For $2 the Bridge Authority will drive you and your bike acrosss the bridge, if you don't want the islan.
Great road out of Mackinac City. Petosky to Interlaken is very hilly on quiet backroads (OK there is 8 miles on a very busy road with a broad shoulder). South of Interlaken its pretty gentle with one screaming downhill. Again, very much back roads.
I didn't ride out of Manitowoc WI, but I don't live too far away and can tell you the first 60 miles are on very, very quiet roads with a tiny bit of roll to them.
We stayed in Motels. I can give you info if you'd like.

Routes / Child on N. Lakes Route?

A couple weeks ago I rode from mid UP (Gulliver) to Ludington. 335 miles. My buddy had a Burley Nomad trailer for our gear. I think it gave us an advantage visibility wise.
Like its been said before, route 2 thru the UP has an extra lane for a shoulder. I was concerned but not after riding it. The wind from the lake can be prodigous,and your trailer may act like a parachute. I wouldn't recommend the Cut River Rd turn off of route 2. VERY FIERCE dog and an apathetic owner. If the owner isn't out you will need plenty of pepper spray to pass.
I don't the Wisconsin route per se, but from living here I can tell you that back roads tend to be very quiet.
The back roads are very quiet in the lower pennisula. Except the 6 miles heading towards Traverse City on M 73. That road has a great shoulder until the uphill portions. I was happy to get off that road.
If you want to pick my brain about any details on services, the roads, etc, let me know.

The wall! I remember coming upon that baby. I didn't know it had a name but BITCH would have been it if I was going UP it. Down seemed like a trick.
RT 2 is fine with a car lane like shoulder. I'd skip all the cut offs -- adds miles and Cut River Road has 2 dogs with VERY bad manners.
My trip to Luddington (from mid UP) last June had zero bugs and only one day of wind. There is a beautiful section of Rt 2 along Lake Michigan that had a horrendous cross wind (from the south) but it was only about 15 miles worth.
We motel'd it. Let me know if you need info on that stuff.
