General Discussion / Favorite book

What is your favorite book to take on a bike tour?

I am preparing for a tour of New England states over two weeks, and looking for a book to keep me company in the evenings. Preferably related to nature adventures, non-fiction, and inspiring. But anything goes.

What do you recommend?

That site www.crazyguyonabike.com does a very good job of covering world wide tours. I am already inspired by a few ideas listed there.

It provides a lot of details (pictures, route, points of interest, etc) about each trip. So I can get a general idea of the tour before diving into the details of planning the route.

Thank you for sharing it.

Do you know of a library for touring routes?

Of course ACA has a set of routes. What about all those other tours that people take? I know there are a lot of ideas and places to visit out there. Most particularly, those tours outside of North America.

When I search online, all I find is commercial tours, but hardly any routes generated by riders, well documented, charted on a map, generated GPX files, and detailed day by day.

Do know of such places?

General Discussion / Maine bike tour questions

Indeed, there are beautiful spots: Bar Harbor, Acadian, Camden, and Wiscasset.

When you have your route charted, pre or post tour, please share with the group. It will be nice to get the local's version of touring in ME.

In fact, I was thinking why is there not a library for cyclists to share their touring routes. That is a subject of another posting.

I have cycled through Maine twice and was not impressed at either times. The roads were too busy and New England charm was just not there.

A couple of things that will make it worth the trip:
1. Cycle through Acadia
2. Continue along the coast into NH or inland into the White Mountains.

Here are a few resources for routes:

- ACA Atlantic Coast route from Bar Harbor: http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/atlanticcoast.cfm?pg=detail&s=1

- Maine Bicycle Map: order copies by phone at 207-624-3250 or online at http://www.exploremaine.org/bike

- Bike Rhode Island by Rhode Island Department of Transportation, http://www.dot.ri.gov/bikeri

But always half the fun is being out there on the bike. Enjoy.

- Fresh fruit (banana, apple, pear, whatever is available)
- Nutella
- Fresh bread
