Lou (and Ron), any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, in terms of routes, quality of the roads, weather in late April, terrain, etc.  Many thanks!

If you'd prefer, you can email me off-list at mgarnett@earthlink.net.

Routes / Zion to Vegas?
« on: April 27, 2004, 09:06:33 pm »
We are planning a trip along the Southern Tier from east to west next spring, but taking the spur up to the Grand Canyon and Zion N.P.  Since we want to end up in L.A. instead of San Francisco, we thought we'd cut across southern Nevada from St. George, Utah to Las Vegas and then on to L.A. from there.  Does anyone know anything about the route between Zion and Vegas?  Terrain?  Best roads?  Terrible passes?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

General Discussion / Safety/money/ATMs/Cash/Traveler's Checks/etc.

Until this last post I was thinking "why isn't anyone suggesting credit cards?"  When my husband and I did our cross-country trip we used our credit card almost exclusively and carried only enough cash for a meal or two and one night's stay.  Even in very rural areas we found that nearly every gas station, restaurant, and motel accepted Mastercard or Visa.  A credit card is easily cancelled if stolen or lost, and most credit card companies will Fedex you a replacement card.  I'd recommend keeping only as much cash as you feel comfortable with, and then using a credit card for everything that you can (it's also a good way to see where your money is going on the trip, because everything is recorded).  Set up online banking for your bills before you leave, if you haven't already, and then you can use libraries for internet access along the way to arrange for payments.  Or some credit card issuers have direct-withdrawal programs for bill payments (even easier).  Good luck!

General Discussion / Chafing

I strongly recommend Assos Chamois Cream.  I used it on a cross-country ride on the Southern Tier this spring (after starting out using A&D ointment).  I have tried Chamois Butt'r also and it is good, but the Assos is absolutely the best thing I have ever tried (I don't really get "saddle sores" per se, but have problems with chafing like you.  I slathered the Assos inside my bike shorts and a bit on myself and then re-applied every 30 miles or so.  It is fabulous -- expensive, yes, but the tub lasts a while and it's worth every penny.
