What is the difference between warmers and compression gear? It all seems to be made of the same material and design.

General Discussion / Funny......but not so much fun.
« on: December 03, 2010, 05:33:52 pm »
Okay....For three days now I have been trying to think of a tactful way of asking this....didn't come up with one so here goes.

I have been training for just over a week now on the Nashua River Rail Trail http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/northeast/nash.htm. Purchasing a decent pair of biking shorts solved my most immediate and painful problem. ;D

Temperatures are in the 30's-40's with a light wind. When I ride I am very comfortable as far as warmth goes but I just can't seem to stop my nose from running!!! I don't want to be wiping my nose on my fleece or gloves.

What do most of you do to prevent/combat this problem? Is this something I can expect to stop once my body has "cleaned up" a bit and I get healthier?

Sorry for the topic but I have to find a hygienic way to solve this issue. Right now I am carrying kleen-ex and having to stop every mile or so to quickly clear up and continue on my way.

Thanks for any advice.

I have decided to use platform pedals with toe cages. What would be the best shoe to wear? A regular hiking shoe? Still get a stiff soled riding shoe? What brand?

I want to take only two pairs of shoes on an extended tour. I am open to sandals....lol. What would you take?

I'm already well into the planning/buying/training stages of a 2011 extended tour. Has anyone ever used a tour to fund raise for a cause? Any experience with this out there?

A family friend has Downs Syndrome and I was just thinking........

In reading the route forums I am finding a lot of acronyms. I looked around and have not found a glossary or anything like that. So..... what does TCL mean?

Classifieds / WTB: Atlantic Coast & Southern Tier Maps
« on: October 19, 2010, 09:32:07 pm »
Will buy, (or better borrow/trade) maps for the Atlantic Coast and Southern Tier. Don't really need the Bar Harbor, ME. to CT section if it happens to be missing.

I will buy them or return them as they are used if your the trusting kind.

Gear Talk / Correct Measurment?
« on: October 19, 2010, 11:58:04 am »
While browsing the forum yesterday I came upon a response to a question about proper bike fitting. It referred to a measurment called VTT? Virtual top tube or something like that? (I may have just butchered the term). What is this and why is it more valuable than stand-over height?

Gear Talk / Down to three bikes....
« on: October 18, 2010, 06:42:33 pm »
In the spring I am taking off an a multi-month tour. It will involve all road types. I am 6' 2" tall and weigh 245 lbs. I am not an experienced rider. My trip will be solo and self contained.

Bike choices? A.) Surly LHT 60cm w/ 26 " wheels
                   B.) Trek 520
                   C.) Novaro Safari 21" frame w/ 29" wheels

Qualities I am looking for...  strength and ease of emergency repair, availability of replacement parts/components...cost $1000 or less...... upright seating position and comfort..(speed is not as important as scenery)

Would you tow a trailer? single/double wheeled? Or carry front & rear panniers?

Anything I haven't considered but should?

Thanks for the feedback!
