Routes / Re: Great Parks North Advice
« on: November 24, 2017, 07:52:00 am »
My buds & I rode from Edmonton to Kalispell in 2011. I put my bike on the plane,
big mistake. I haven't had the best luck with traveling with my bike on the airlines. My main complaint
was we're delayed 24 hrs. I can tell you several sad stories but i won't bore you. I would ship BikeFlights, i've had no problems there.

We rode from Edmonton to Jasper. Gradual incline with headwinds.Once in Jasper
we got on the Iceberg Parkway. Very scenic, tuff, ride. My account isn't much different from what you
read however, have a plan B for where you camp. Some campgrounds were closed due to
bears. There were a few days we had to ride much further than we wanted to to find a campground
or hotel. I saw more bears crossing the road and along side the road then i see deer in my home state (Ky)

Can't remember the Hwy. No. but from Eureka to Whitefish that road had lots of traffic
& no shoulders that i can remember.

We had great weather, little cool in the mornings but warmed up quick.
Have a good ride

Gear Talk / Fixing panniers
« on: August 17, 2016, 01:49:50 pm »
I have 4 Madden Panniers that I bought about 15-20 yrs. ago. In Montana one year, my rear rack broke & by the time I
got my bike stop I had burned a hole in one of my panniers. To fix it, would a iron-on patch work or is
there something else that will work better? The hole is about as big as a penny. Thanks for any
help.

Routes / Adirondack Park Loop
« on: August 11, 2016, 12:40:28 pm »
My buds & I are planning a week long trip along the Adirondack Loop. Leaving mid Sept. We like to keep our route between 45 & 50 miles/day. The Adventure Cycling map  has limited space to show all campgrounds; are there more campgrounds along the route that are not shown on AC map? Private, R.V. parks, e.t.c.
Thanks for any help

My experience with shipping my bike via airlines hasn't been good. The only way I would ship my bike via airlines or any of my gear if it's a direct flight, hard for them to lose. I would NEVER ship it Delta, they charge $200 each way.  More times than not the bike comes late which delays my trip.

If I were you, I would box it myself & ship it UPS?Fedex to a hotel in the city in which I was starting & find a bike shop in the town I was ending & either have them tear it down & box it or, get a box from them & you box it. To me it's worth the extra money for the bike shop to ship it home when you are finish. I could tell you stories that will make you cry.

Routes / Re: Fort Knox,KY restricted?

To my knowledge U.S.60/U.S. 31W are public hwy. that can be taken 24/7. Those roads don't go into the base. You are taking your life in your own hands if you ride 31W to Louisville. 31W is also called Dixie Hwy. a.k.a. Dixie Dieway. You might contact somebody from the Louisville Bicycle Club. They might be able to find you a safer way to get to downtown Louisville. I don't know that part of town.

Routes / Re: Lexignton, KY to Asheville, NC - how to develop a route?

Welcome to Big Blue Country, anyway, you are about 40 miles from Berea which you can catch the TransAm route through Ky. which will take you to VA. From there you're on your own.
Good Luck

Routes / Re: Great Parks North - Canadian Camping
« on: December 18, 2015, 04:55:41 pm »
We started our trip end of June into July 2010 from Edmonton, Alberta,  rode to Jasper & took the Icefields Parkway.
We had no problem getting a campsite except around July 1. I think that's Canada Day, I think it's a version
of the U.S. 4th of July. Other than that no problems. We ended our trip in Kalispell, Mt.
May the wind be at your back.

I am trying to come up with a Plan B since the fires in Glacier are happening. We are thinking to start in Missoula & go to Red Lodge & climb Beartooth Hwy. into Yellowstone. Anybody know a route that will keep me off the Interstate?
Thanks for any help.

Gear Talk / Re: Gearing for Touring Bike
« on: June 19, 2015, 02:11:42 pm »
Thanks for the info. I have 26" wheels, 26x32 is my lowest gear. Would it be best to go with a 22" in the front?

Gear Talk / Gearing for Touring Bike
« on: June 18, 2015, 01:59:50 pm »
Looking for some insight from the experts. i have a 32 tooth rear cassette on the back of my touring bike. i am not that strong of a climber. I used this gearing in Canada on the Iceberg Parkway & had a hard time. The climbs with the elevation got me. Is it worth the expense to move up to a different cassette, if so to what, or do i need to just suck it up? This year i will be looping around Montana so there will me plenty of hills.
Any help will be great.
Thanks

Routes / Missoula to Ovando, G-town Lake, Wisdom
« on: January 09, 2015, 07:21:18 am »
This is probably one of the few places that I haven't ridden in Montana. Starting in Missoula to
Ovando, to Georgetown Lake, Anconda, Wisdom.  I have the route we would
like to take.  We would like to keep our mileage to 50-60'day. Can anybody help me with services such
as grocery, campgrounds, road surface,  etc.?

Thanks for any help.

Routes / Re: Fairbanks -> Anchorage or Anchorage -> Fairbanks?
« on: February 27, 2014, 05:42:56 pm »
I did a trip in Alaska about 6 or 7 yrs. ago. what we did was fly into anchorage, train to whistler (I think), ferry to valdez. we went by were the valdez went aground. we started our trip in valdez, rode up to Fairbanks, took a couple of days off. went to denali for a couple of days. took a tour on a camp bus & saw lots of wildlife. mosqtoes were horrible. at the time road construction was going on north of anchorage. in hind sight I would of stop in telketna (sp) & trained into anchorage. it was a great trip & would do it again. I think the trip was about 650 miles. I was effected a little by the daylight. good thing about this is if you get behind in your schedule you can ride at 2 a.m. I would use lights just to be visible.
have a good trip
