Routes / Adirondack Loop - Help Needed

I am planning a loaded trip CCW around the Adirondack State Park using ACA maps. The trip is supposed to start May 8, 2009 and I'm finding that the State Parks I'm planning on using do not open until after the Memorial Day Weekend. Short of rescheduling my vacation, does anyone have any suggestions. Can I camp where I planned on camping even though the park is closed? Are there alternate places to camp other than those listed on ACA maps? Should I just do it anyway and hope the local police will let me use municipal parks, etc?

Sorry to hear that Daryl,
You're right though, commuting does depend on where you live and how far from work you are. Can you take a shower and change when you get there? Can you take a bus or other mass transit partway? In other words, how much infrastructure do you have, how much support do you have? I'd say move to Portland Oregon. It's never 17 degrees here, though in the winter that stinking wind can howl and blow right through you.

I bike commute everyday. Portland, Oregon is a great city for this. My one-way distance home to work is 13 miles. However, in the winter, if its windy i'll pedal to the bus stop and take my bike on the bus and shorten the 13 miles to 3 miles.

regarding dedicated bike paths. There are few walkers, strollers, joggers at 5:30 in the morning.

I live in Portland Oregon. I moved here 6 years ago from the east coast. Portland is the most bike friendly city that I've ever seen. I bicycle commute to work year round (with the exception of ice storm days or wind storm days - not that frequent). My one-way distance is 13 miles with 10 of those miles being on dedicated bike paths. It can't be beat.

Thanks Bill Blue - that is the approach I've taken. I don't want to oversell it or drive anyone away. I like the idea of having them plan the trip. Once it warms up a bit here, we'll do that.

thank you for your advice - it was very helpful. I'll give it a shot. It's probably one of those generational issues. My kids are used to being driven from place to place. When I was young, my main mode of transport was my bicycle.

Youth Bicyle Travel / Help needed

I have 5 kids - 17, 16, 14, 11, 8. My older three do not want to have anything with going on bike rides or short tours. My 8 year old will go with me anywhere. The 11 year old is hot and cold. How do I encourage all of the kids to go on bicycle adventures? I'm about to give up and just take the youngest with me.

Gear Talk / Bar end vs. STI.....who cares?

I think the answer to this question depends on where on the drops you spend most of your time. The majority of my time is spend on the hoods when I'm in shifting situations - STI works fine. I spend very little time in the lower drop position - mainly when coasting down a hill and I don't usually need to shift much.

Gear Talk / interesting experience bike shopping

I purchased my dream touring/commuter bike - a Burley Hudson. Steel frame. I added fenders and a low-rider front rack and its good to go. However, I just heard that there was some sort of shake-up at Burley and that they are not going to make bicycle any more. I'm not sure if that affects the price of their existing bikes.

You might save a bit of money and still get a quality bicycle with the Burley Hudson. I have a brand-new one and think it is great. I can't compare it to the Comotion though since I haven't ridden or seen it.
