General Discussion / PTS? Post Tour Syndrome?
« on: November 06, 2008, 04:39:41 pm »
Fellow tourists:  I find that this last year after finishing my cross country ride that I can't stop thinking about it. Images rise unbidden.  Smells, emotions, the complext tapestry of what I experienced comes over me at some point every day.  I have done a lot of intense outdoor activites (the vertical face of Half Dome among them), but few things in life have had such a lingering effect as those three months by myself riding from ocean to ocean.  I'm calling this Post Tour Syndrome (PTS), and I seem to have it bad/good.

Damn, bike touring is AMAZING, truly one of the great things in life.  Kudos to you all and ACA for helping make this activity accessible to so many.

Cheers,

Scott

General Discussion / Dumpster Diving Rider?
« on: March 23, 2008, 11:41:19 am »
Whatever happened to that young woman who was thinking about doing a TransAm by feeding out of dumpsters along the way?  It was an interesting discussion, and I'm curious to see if she went for it and how she fared.  I was able to do my crossing.  In so many little towns where I hit the grocery/convenience store and collapsed in the park, the idea of rooting around in a dumpster was just unthinkable--and in a good number (most?) cases not even an option.  If you had relied on dumpsters, you'd go hungry or starve.  I dare anyone to "live off the land" in a place like Otis, Kansas, or Romeo, Colorado--yikes!

Eat and Ride Well.

General Discussion / Thanks ACA and this Forum!
« on: December 03, 2007, 11:42:35 pm »
I've recently completed a trans-American tour, one of the greatest experiences of my life.  Close to half of my route was on ACA maps--Northern Tier and Great Rivers.  With the aid of this forum and those maps, I had a wonderful experience.  I started in Bar Harbor, Maine, and finished in the Pacific in Ventura, California, Aug. 10th through Nov. 15th, 4,661 miles.  Thanks for all the help!  Everyone should do a ride like this at least once in his or her life.

For those interested, I've got a blog:

General Discussion / Staying in Bar Harbor, ME?
« on: June 13, 2007, 11:52:47 pm »
Well, I've bought tickets, and I'm heading out to Maine in August to start my TransAm.  I'll be in Bar Harbor on the 8th and plan to leave on the 10th.  What are the best and cheapest places to stay?  Any possibility of stealth camping?  I'm not on a super tight budget, but I'll be on the road for three months.  Got keep things in perspective.  Any advice/experience greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Scott

General Discussion / # of TransAm riders?
« on: February 24, 2006, 01:00:17 am »
Does anyone have a guess at how many people attempt a TransAm in any given year?  It seems impossible to estimate--but maybe not.  I would include north/south as well as east/west.  What say you?

General Discussion / Touring w/doggie?
« on: January 16, 2004, 09:38:21 pm »
Does anyone out there have experience touring with a good-sized dog?  We've got a wonderful 50lb. border collie/cattle dog mix that we're going to try touring with.  We'll be getting a Burley "Solo" trailer.  The idea is to have my wife as stoker on our recumbent tandem trike control the dog while he walks/trots uphill and then have Django the Wonder Dog ride down hill and on the flats.  We think we can get him to jump in and out of the trailer for rolling terrain.  That's the theory, anyway!  Any imput, advice, wisdom appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott
