Gear Talk / Re: Sources for Ultra Violent Protective Clothing
« on: February 23, 2017, 07:12:07 pm »
I bought a bright orange and yellow green long sleeve t shirt from Amazon, made by Hanes. These are SPF 50, bright colored, wash out easy, light for wearing in hot weather( have used it in 90 degree days), and I never want to wear a cotton long sleeve or short sleeve t shirt again. Love thess and they cost 10.00 each.

Gear Talk / Re: Single pair of shoes, or bike AND walking shoes?
« on: November 24, 2016, 09:39:33 am »
I have been touring with Montrail Mountain Masochist shoes and VP Platform pedals. The Shoes are a light hiking shoe so the sole is stiff and has good traction. I can hike all day in these if I decide to be off the bike for a day. The VP Platform pedals, get the ones with the X pattern so you can take them off with an allen wrench, some do not. This pedal has replacement pins. Love this combination  and have toured in Europe, North and South America with this. The shoes are great, 2nd pair now almost wore out. The pedals hold in wet and muddy conditions and is just the right size platform. Then light shoes for camp and hostels, flip flops. I always wear wool socks to keep my feet happy wet or dry and love smart wool

General Discussion / Pittsburgh PA Vehicle Parking
« on: April 29, 2016, 09:43:26 am »
I will be coming to Pittsburgh, Pa about October 15, 2016 and need a safe  place to park my vehicle for about 3 weeks. I will be bike touring the Allegheny Passage and C & O Canal and on down the east coast for about 3 weeks, till about November 5, 2016. This is sort of a group of friends that will meet but we will be staying in a motel so the vehicle parking is the only thing I am requesting. Thank You in advance for your help.
Also any help on getting around Pittsburgh to start the trail woulld be helpful.

Gear Talk / Great Divide Equipment
« on: January 21, 2004, 04:56:50 am »
You would be alll right with just a rear rack with 20 to 25 pounds of weight. My thought is 8 pounds will afffect stearing with a handlebar bag. I use a handlebar bag only for small camera, and smacks.
I just don't know how you will keep weight so low on the Great Divide. At time I carried 2 gallons of water and 3 days of food and just made it to the next provision spot. There are some lonely and dry areas on the Great Divide. I don't think you can go quite that light. I would suggest from and rear panniers or a bob. I have used both and they work well.
