Thanks for the input, i'll see if I can test a couple out at the shop. I was just curious, what brand of panniers did you use?

Gear Talk / Pannier heel room
« on: February 20, 2006, 12:54:48 am »
I'm new to touring and am planning a cross country tour this summer. Right now trying to pick between panniers, BOB, or the nomad.  I'm leaning towards panniers, but am worried about heel clearance.  Is there generally a big problem with the heel hitting the pannier?  Will it matter that I am tall and have large feet?  Thanks

Gear Talk / Which type of mini stove?
« on: May 08, 2006, 04:40:15 pm »

I'm not very familiar with BTU's and how much is needed.    I am comparing two stoves:

1) 1 lb stove piece that goes atop a propane tank
         8000 BTU's
         55 min burn time

2) 2.2 lb self standing stove (propane)
         5000 BTU's
         3.5 hours burn time

The extended burn time for model two looks great, but I've heard that 5000 BTU's isn't really hot enough to be worth it.  What do some of you experienced people think?? Thanks

Gear Talk / Windsor Tourist? Is this a good bike?
« on: February 22, 2006, 10:01:21 pm »
dknapp, do you mean that the '06 Randonee has the 26/36/48?  I'm not too savvy yet on chainring size; you basically want a lower set for hills, right? (esp for touring) Also, what is a good set of sizes for touring, is the 30/42/52 too big?  I think I've heard that you want your lowest ring to be in the 20's...?

Hmm I see what you are getting at about maybe the company uses an old Windsor name, but I've never heard of Windsor other than at bikesdirect.  Plus, they have the Fuji brand which is still doing well, no doubt.  After doing some more research since I first posted, I still do not know if this bike would hold up.  I do know that it has a cromoly frame which would do well, along with a variety of high quality SHimano parts.  I'd say you were right about maybe upgrading the tires, if anything.  I've been a little wary of the Windsor since I can't seem to find anyone who's had one, so I've gone up just a bit in price and am looking at the Fuji Touring, Bianchi Volpe, and Jamis Aurora.  These are all tried and true touring bikes ranging from $825(aurora) to $900.  Not too far off of the Windsor $695 price tag.

I was wondering if anyone has heard or has experience a Windsor Tourist bike.  I need a bike on the "cheaper" side of touring bike costs for some loaded touring.......how does this bike compare to others kinda close to its price, such as the trek 520, fuji touring, bianchi volpe, or novara safari?

Thanks for your help everyone

Routes / Midwest Routes
« on: February 10, 2008, 07:21:05 pm »
I'm looking for some official maps of good loops in the Midwest, especially in Iowa. All the official maps seem to avoid the cornfields of iowa :) I am definitely craving a trip, but need something that will take about a week or less (<500 miles).

I know RAGBRAI is an option, but I'm needing a real TOUR and not a party. Thanks!

Routes / Mckenzie Pass (oregon, Transamerica route)
« on: February 10, 2008, 07:15:03 pm »
Two summers ago I went through the pass on June 4th I believe.  The road was still closed to cars but I just went around the gates on my bike.  About 1.5 lanes were plowed free of snow, so I had a great time biking through a 5 foot high tunnel of snow with no cars all the way to Sisters!

I actually found the appalachians easier than the
Rockies.  Yes, the grades are more spread out in the West, but in the East there is often the opportunity with the ups and downs to get momentum to make it up the grades a bit easier.

General Discussion / Contact lenses
« on: February 10, 2008, 09:11:36 pm »
I've got the little thin ones that you need to take out with a finger.  I found it perfectly fine taking these out every night of my transamerican tour and putting the contact case in the corner of my tent while I slept.  Just make sure your fingers are clean and the multi-purpose contact solution will do the rest.

Be ON the road as soon as it is light enough to be safe, get a lot of miles in by about 1pm, then take either take a nice long break or take it easy from the hottest hours of 1-4 or 5pm.  Then go a little more and start all over the next day!

General Discussion / Is there anything such as cycling sunglasses?
« on: May 14, 2006, 08:56:34 pm »
I'm looking for a pair of sunglasses to wear probably everyday while on tour (road) this summer. Is there anything I need to know?  Is there a type of sunglasses just for cycling or does it really matter?  Unless I hear otherwise, I'm looking at maybe picking up a pair of wrap Bolle sunglasses.

General Discussion / Using Headphones on tour?
« on: May 08, 2006, 04:27:22 pm »
I'll be bringing headphones and an mp3 player on my 6 week tour.  If you love music it can be great when you're taking a break or when you're done biking for the day.

Everyone else is right, don't use them while on the bike.
