Routes / Pacific Coast from Oxnard to Watsonville
« on: May 03, 2008, 03:19:35 am »
Wow! What a trip.  I just completed my trip.  Monday was warm from
Oxnard to Goleta.  Tuesday was cold and windy from Goleta to
Lompoc.  The "wind tunnel" at Gaviota Pass was impossible to bike thru
so I walked it.  It was cold at River Park campground at night and still
cold and windy next morning on Wed.  The trip thru Guadalupe was
windy and cold.  It's a shame there are no trees to protect you against
the wind.  Once I arrived in Oceano and Avila Beach it was warm again
and the wind died down and there were plenty of trees to break the
wind.  I stayed overnight in Avila Beach campground but it smelled like
a sanitary waste dump.  The next night I stayed in Pismo Beach at a
friend house.

Hi Valygrl,
I had a feeling about the wind when I rode from West Los Angeles Buddhist Church to Oxnard Buddhist Church 27 years ago. Thanks for the info.  I will keep it in my notes when I go from San Luis Obispo to Watsonville for my next trip in September.

Routes / Pacific Coast from Oxnard to Watsonville

On April 28 to May 1, I'm planning to ride from Oxnard to Avila Beach.  I'm staying in a hotel in Goleta, camping out at Riverpark campground near Lompoc, camping out at Avila Beach, and staying at a relatives house then taking the train back to Oxnard.  Is there anything I need to be aware about during that week?  On September 29 to October 2, I'm riding from San Luis Obispo to approximately Watsonville/Salinas. Is there anything I need to be aware about during that week? Any comments are welcome.

Routes / Southern Tier

I just completed the Section 1 of the Southern Tier.  Actually, I rode
from Buddhist Temple of San Diego to Arizona Buddhist Temple in
three sections.  The first leg was completed 9/25 to 9/27/06 from San
Diego to El Centro. The second leg was completed 4/23 to 4/25/07
from El Centro to Quartzsite.  The last leg was completed 9/25 to 9/26
from Quartzsite to Glendale.  I did not start from Balboa Park nor did I
end in  Tempe.  However, I was able to complete it while holding on to
two jobs and going on to three jobs.  I've made excuses for not doing
anything but now I get to "Ride to Live" and "Live to Ride". Pacific Coast
is next.

What is a B-10 campground in Quartzsite? Is it an RV campground?  It
says on the map it is located at 615 W. Main St.

Amtrak did not charge extra for bringing a bicycle on board, but that
was from L.A. to San Diego.

I've taken my bike on Amtrak had a rack so that I don't need to take it
apart.  I had my bike taken apart and put in a box and shipped back to
me by UPS. I took apart my bicycle and put in a bag on a bus.  UPS was
expensive around $90.  I heard not all trains have a ski or bicycle rack
for hanging a bicycle.  I never was charged extra to take my bicycle in a
bag during my recent trip to El Centro and return back from Quartzsite.
I purchased a bicycle bag for about $50 and I take it with me because I
can fold it put it on my rear rack.  It beats having to look for a box.

Thanks for the info.  I wasn't sure if I could make it from Quartzsite to
Wickenburg in one day, but I will give it all I can.

Does anyone know anything about B-10 Campground in Quartzsite?
There are only RV parks and no other campgrounds between
Quartzsite and Wickenburg.  Can I camp on the side of SR60 as long as
I am a certain distance from the road?

I camped out at the Pad 1 sign on April 23, 2007.  I setup my tent but I
could not hit the stakes into the ground.  I found some rocks and
placed them around the stakes to keep the wind from blowing down
my tent.  What is below the surface at the Pad locations?

What is the cost to stay one night at Gecko Campground and Palos
Verde Campground?  What is 337-4400 and 339-4384?  If these phone
numbers, why is there no area codes?

Routes / California Hwy 94 - Southern Tier

Last September, I rode my bicycle from the Amtrak station to Market
Street. I turned north on 30th St, turned right on University, left on
Fairmount, right on El Cajon, left on Baltimore Drive, right on Fletcher
Parkway bike path to El Cajon.  I stayed overnight in El Cajon and went
north on Johnson, right on Bradley, north on Magnolia, and right on
Woodside. I followed the South Tier map instructions to El Centro.  I
road from El Centro to Quartzsite last April.  I never saw or heard of
Highway 94.  What he talking about?

I must be going blind.  I don't see Highway 94 anywhere in California
Southern Tier. Where is it?

I can't find the exact location of the campground near Palo Verde. It
says it is two miles south of the town in a dried out lagoon.  Where is it
exactly?
