Routes / Route 66
« on: April 08, 2004, 02:15:47 am »
There are several web sites devoted just to route 66.  Not just its past but its present also.  You should be able to get everything you need with a simple web search. I am an old car buff so I have checked it out. Route 66 drivers tour it regularly so the end to end route is known including the detours around the missing sections.  Good luck on your ride.

Routes / route alongside the Appalachian trail
« on: April 04, 2004, 03:15:51 am »
I have been following several AT thru hikers via their on line tour journals at www.whiteblaze.net

We were trout fishing in Helen Ga just this past October. Several other towns on the AT are familiar to me also. With some planning I think this could be a great trip. Hmmmmm time to get the maps out.

Thanks for your imput and encouragement.

Not having a desire to actually Hike the AT I am curioius about a road route to cycle that might run paralell to the AT, passing thru the towns that the trail intersects with.  Has anyone done this.

So much pressure in trying to go fast.  Why?  You will never be fast enough.  Maybe you aren't ment to be a Racist. Become a Tourist and enjoy those beautiful hills and country side. Repeat after me:  "I will NEVER be fast enough.  I will NEVER be fast enough" ;)

You get a Gold Star for being a person of patience and integrity. I am sorry you suffered with such a boorish companion.  Fortunately your trip appears to have been most gratifying. Welcome to the US of A

General Discussion / good experiences with motorists
« on: May 17, 2007, 07:32:59 pm »
The past week I rode the West Orange Trail just outside of Orlando Florida. Its 22 miles long and crosses many side streets and roads.  I was amazed at how the motorists would actually WAIT while I approached the intersection and they waved me thru. Time after time. It was a joy.

We've got a 2 wheel bent and a tadpole trike here in the garage. I have not done a solo tour yet.  I have done several week long supported tours. On the wide open road the trike and trailer seems the way to go.  But in town where you may want or need to walk the trike and stop and park the trike and trailer then they lose and the 2-wheeler with panniers wins out. Trailers always look well organized and seem convienent to operate out of. Decisions, decisions, decisions.   :) ;)

The opportunity to confuse :confuse: another is not to be passed by.  You NEED to ride a recumbent.  Better yet a recumbent trike. Ultra confort especially with the trike. And always a confortable seat in camp. Trikes can CRAWL up those loooong grades at 1,2,3 miles an hour without you falling over.  check out www.bentrideronline  :) ;)

I was serious about the trail/pannier comment. We live in South Florida and I do not recall ever seeing a touring cyclist with a trailer. We have seen lots with panniers.  However in the Adventure Cycling publications there quite a few trailers shown. And in forum discussions the trailer folk are well represented.  I just found it curious. :) ;)

I found it interesting that so few trailers were shown. Only a couple as I recall. Yet when the panniers vs trailers topic comes up the opinions seem to be about equal. :) ;)

Check out the main Adventure Cycling home page and go to the How-To Department.  There is a great article on how to buy a recumbent bike.  Its a good read.

To Mark of the Dalton Boys. To all please forgive this brief OT. USPA C-something, never did the night jump. Jumped all over FL, Landed on the beach at the Flora-Bama Lounge, did 25K with O2, Z-hills, DeLand, and I miss every second of it. NOW BACK TO CYCLING:
