General Discussion / Lots of hurting bikers out there
« on: August 07, 2006, 10:22:25 pm »
I will agree that most bike shops do not do a decent job of fitting a bike and a good fit does make a big big difference.  I loved my Cannondale and kept it for a long while before selling it.  That bike did fit right but after 300 sky-dives, several car wrecks and 34 years in construction this ole body was not in very good shape regardless of the fit. I could not do back to back 50 mile days and was unable to tour. It was my wife Judy who urged me to go ahead and buy a bent.  I bought an Easy Racers EZ-1 for around $500.00 or so as I recall.  The first weekend I had it I rode 50 miles Friday, Saturday and then on Sunday.  That would have been physically impossible for me on my Cannondale or even on our Raleigh tandem.
Cycling is really a lot of fun.  If you are hurting its no fun.  Get rid of the hurt and get back to the fun. A good bent shop will have a variety of bents to try out and will encourage you to try several for long test ride.  And ANY bent rider will be thrilled to share their experiences with you.  We bought our bents at Atlantic Cycle in Margate Florida.  We also have a Catrike Speed.

Cruising this forum tonight was like peeking in the door at the the ER.  A lot of you guys are sure suffering and I used to suffer too.  Now if you were to head over to the www.bentrideronline.com forumn you won't hear about all of those aches and pains.  Maybe its those recumbent bikes we ride.  Just something to think about.

General Discussion / Shoulder Pain solutions?

A curious point about "fast".  I used to have to be fast just to get to the end of the ride before the pain got to the end of me.  Now I relax, site-see, I have a whole different mind set.  I do supported multi-day trips and at the end of the day we all arrive at the same camp ground. Fast, slow, who cares.

Dana, I have been following your post and I have been in your place. I am 57 years old and have riddden all my life. Accumulated injuries and "old age" left me to where I was not able to ride two days in a row it was that bad. I was so discouraged because my dream to tour had become the impossible dream. Several years ago at the urging of my wife Judy I bought an inexpensive ($400.00)recumbent bike and my dream has become my reality. Check out the Sun Bicycles EZ-1 at www.sunbicycles.com This is like riding a lawn chair. I can ride 50-60 miles day after day.  :)

Isn't it odd,  that recumbent riders never complain about pain.  Maybe they are on to something.  Come to think of it I have never seen an easy chair shaped like a bike seat.  But recumbent seats are shaped like easy chairs.

Now that Jim opened the door to this energy thing my gripe is the focus on recycling.  What a waste.  All those plastic bins and the special garbage trucks making a special trip around town to pick up a milk jug and a dozen soda cans at each house. Then they haul this stuff back to the special building built to sort the stuff and then haul the sorted stuff back to wherever it goes.  And how much energy does that all take. I say just pick up everything in one trip and haul it all to the dump.

We like the Shimano sandals with SPD's.  They allow your feet to breathe.  But then we are recumbent riders, pedaling to the beat of a difference cadence

With past experience as a fire fighter and first responder, after a serious crash ya gotta be able to stop the blood flow.  If you can't talk your local EMT out of a 3x10 trauma dressing then carry a (don't laugh) individually wrapped super size sanitary napkin.  And some tape to keep it in place.     ;)

General Discussion / Keeping Clean
« on: January 20, 2006, 11:52:36 pm »
At the end of the day I shower (campground, motel, lake, etc) with my clothes on and give them a washing and take them off and then give me a washing. I hang them on the bike or somewhere to dry and put on a dry pair of shorts and shirt that i will sleep in and wear the next day.  (thats 2 sets of clothes) and I have a third set of dry clothes in the pannnier. So that works out to the pair you wear, the pair that is drying and the pair that are dry and clean in the pannier.  Often the clothes you wash at night will not be dry in the morning so as you ride off have your damp clothes hanging in the wind as you ride.
