General Discussion / favorite off the bike aspect
« on: August 25, 2005, 08:29:08 pm »
Some folks ride for the ride, that is to log a lot of miles.  I ride for the destination.  I need a place to ride to. Wether it is to the store, a park, the coffee shop or to explore a new area I have never been to. So to answer the question what I enjoy after the ride is the intended destination at the half way point.

General Discussion / Tire Liners for Puncture Protection
« on: August 25, 2005, 08:21:27 pm »
Tuffy liners, thorn proof tubes, great ($$$$$) tires and Velox rim tape.  One tip: dust the entire inside of the tire, the tuffy, and the tube with baby powder as you put it together.  I use a soft brush and swish the baby powder around all over.  I cannot remember the last time Judy or I had a flat.  The dumbest thing I was ever told was by a guy who said he didn't use tuffy's etc because "he was real fast at changing tires and patching tubes"  I bet he was.

General Discussion / Why no Recumbents Bicycles in AC?
« on: August 04, 2005, 09:59:24 pm »
I just went to the AC library to do a quick search of recumbent articles but got a "sorry server down" message.  You might want to try later.  Judy and I both ride bents.  I could be wrong but i seem to think there have been bent articles written in the past.  You can submit your own article.  They have some requirements as to the format but thats about it.

General Discussion / FEAR! Leaving loaded bike outside.
« on: July 22, 2005, 12:51:35 am »
I always lock up my 'bent everywhere i go. At night if i am camping i run a cable lock thru both wheels and another locks the frame and all to something immoveable. Hotels/motels i always take the bike up to the room even in the elevator.
The panniers are locked to the bike and the "carry bag" I take with me.

You need "Bag Balm" its a product originally used by the dairy industry that has found high praise in the cycle fraternity.  It comes in a square green tin.  It works.  Although the best solution for all aches and pains is to buy a recumbent. Just imagine cruising down the pike on a lawn chair.

I did sign up for something a little different and very lazy.  THIS IS NOT MY REGULAR ROUTINE.  Bubbas Pampered Pedalers:  200 riders from Key Largo to Key West in November. The pace is very easy. The most perfect of all Florida weather.  The lazy part?  Well for a few bucks extra Bubba provides a large tent and queen size air mattress, sets up the tent, blows up the mattress, and puts your gear bag and a fresh towel on the bed ready and waiting for whenever you arrive. And there is a lawn chair too.  In the morning; pack only your personal gear bag, leave it in the tent and walk out the door.  And the food is out of this world.  I will be taking a fishing rod and fishing along the way.  Kye West Here I Come.

TGPELZ, you are a my kind of traveler.  I try to travel light but comfort in camp is worth the price of added weight on the road.  I don't understand those that ride 75 to 100 miles a day...WHY ???  The Natchez Trace is one great example of of a tour that should not be rushed.  The NT is on my list of must-do rides.  I came across a guy towing a kayak with his bike. He had all of his gear in the yak and said the yak was only a few pounds heavier than a regular bike trailer and he loves to fish.

Heidi is well on her way. Her journal is 49 pages long as of this evening and she is a superb adventure writer.  I followed her last trip from NC to Alaska and back and it was awesome.  She is one fantastic lady.

If you buy a recumbent you will not have any aches or pains.  I ride an Easy Racer EZ-1 and my wife has a Catrike.  Its like riding in a lawn chair.

I do think the air horn has a lot of merit.  It certainly does not require much aim.

I ride an EZ Racer and Judy has a Catrike.  Yes you are really low to the ground.  We had a wedge tandem before we got bent. What brand of T-T.

Another note on pepper spray.  The neighbors goats kept grazing in our yard which I didn't mind because I think they are cute and friendly.  But when they ate all the flowers off of the hibiscus trees they crossed the line for Judy.  You couldn't shoo them fella's away. Reluctantly I tried some pepper spray on the leader of the pack at truely point blank range, inches away,I felt terrible as I did it. He responded like it was seasoning for the Marigolds and just kept munching. away.

We all struggle with this.  It begins with what to take and what to leave behind.  I got a lot of usefull info from Applachian Trail hiker forums.  Those folks know how to travel light.  Its all about finding the line between comfort and cargo.  My number 1 rule is to keep your stuff dry.  I use roll top dry bag type of panniers like those made by Vaude. Packing is trial and error, heavy stuff to the bottom, equally spread out, load it up and go for a ride.

General Discussion / New here and seeking advice
« on: January 02, 2005, 01:23:12 am »
My wife Judy and I ride recumbent bikes.  I have a 2 wheel Easy Racer and she has a 3 wheel Catrike.  Imagine cruising down the road in a lounge chair and at the end of 60 miles you get off of the bike and feel no aches, pains, soreness or any discomfort.  I am 57 years old and have been riding since i was a kid. The last bike i sold before buying the'bent was a Cannondale road bike with 4000 miles on it.  I recomend going to www.bentrideronline.com, it is THE premier web site for all recumbent information. One last thought, Adventure Cycling is THE place to be for touring.
