General Discussion / Re: International Bike Shipping
« on: July 17, 2011, 08:12:13 pm »
Hi Tim-

My wife and I have flown in and out of Shannon airport twice with our bicycles. Each time we were able to store our bike boxes in a large utility room. We just had to find an airport employee and have them unlock the door. You may not end up with the exact same box but you will get a box nonetheless. I would perhaps just check with the airport itself to see if they still offer that service.

We have always taken our bikes on the plane and in these days of extra charges Aer Lingus still seems to be pretty good about taking them. They charged $50 for the boxed bike assuming it is just your second piece of luggage.

Shannon airport is pretty small, by US standards anyway, and it is easy to find a quiet corner to re-assemble your bike. The roads out of the airport are small and very easy to navigate.

If there's anything else I can help with please don't hesitate to ask.

Have a great tour.

Gear Talk / Anyone been touring on the Salsa Vaya yet?
« on: November 30, 2010, 08:16:34 am »
It's time for a new touring rig for my wife and so far the Salsa Vaya looks like the frontrunner. With some tweaking to gearing and shifters this looks like it could be a worthy machine. My wife is 5"1" so usually the smallest frame size is what she needs. We're also looking to stay with 26" wheels.

She has tried out a friends Long Haul Trucker and found it to be a tank with a capitol T. I know touring bikes need to be a little heavy to handle loads but jeez, c'mon. The 46cm LHT weighed more than my 57cm Waterford. (I know, I know apples/oranges etc)

So, anyone have any real touring experience on the Vaya?

Thanks,
Ray
