To anyone interested in a cross-country bike ride this summer, from Everett, WA. To Washington D.C. contact   http://www.bike4peace.org
We leave August 1 and arrive in D.C. on September 22, which is world car free day!
This 7 ½ week tour takes us through 11 states; Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, S. Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and D.C.
There is no support vehicle on this tour, every rider carries his supplies, we share the load on certain things. We have a network of hosts that put us up for the night in most stops, or we camp. If you are interested, we have a copy of the route guide that can be emailed to you.
I have done this ride 2 years now and I'm looking forward to leading the way again this summer. It is an adventure of a life time!!!

Urban Cycling / why bike?
« on: January 07, 2007, 05:16:23 am »
why bike? tell your story.
it all started for me when i lost a job about 12 years ago and could not afford to drive anymore. now, i do it because of the many benefits, not just the money thing.
cars are coffins! they rob me of any serenity that i have. riding a bicycle is healthier for the "whole" person, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. to me cycling has been a spiritual experience. it is very liberating for the soul to not be trapped in a box, isolated from from your surroundings.
thats why i bike4peace!

Urban Cycling / commuting by bike

that's good mike, i like it!
i live to ride myself. i can't think of any better way to get around than a bicycle, especially today.
i live just north of seattle, in everett. it's a small city that is getting more and more bike friendly because of a bunch of us that make sure people have good bikes to ride and know how to ride them. we opened a community bike shop here that provides bikes for transportation, maintenance classes, earn-a-bike program and low cost repairs.
some of us ride across the country every summer to promote cycling as a more peaceful, healthier, cleaner, sane way to get around. we call it bike4peace.

Urban Cycling / what bike do you use for pure urban ridin'?
« on: January 07, 2007, 05:05:09 am »
man, i use to ride an old univega during the winter (i live in the seattle area, nasty wet winters) and then ride my salsa laraza during the summer. that's when i had a 14+ mile commute everyday. i still have the salsa, nicest bike i've ever owned and i've had a few. i use a bridgestone cb 0 for my everyday use and touring. if you don't know, the cb 0 is a "city bike". it's kinda like the xo, but more of a touring geomemtry and not as nice a frame. but it's a great bike. i've riden across the country the past 2 summers. i've upgraded it with all new old stock suntour xcpro, the famous moustache handlebar and brookes saddle.

General Discussion / Where this year?
« on: January 07, 2007, 04:37:17 am »
my plan is to ride bike4peace again. the tour leaves everett,wa on august 1st and arrives in washington d.c. on september 22nd, world peace day.
bike4peace is a self-supported tour, no sag vehicle. riders are supported by hosts along the way.
the ride is about promoting sustainable, peaceful, healthier, cleaner options. this will be the 3rd year for the ride.
we are hoping to attract more riders year after year.
it is a beautiful yet demanding route through the cascade mountains, the rockies, over the continental devide. through the dry praries of south dakota and wyoming. the rolling hills of wisconsin.
there is a website, http://bike4peace.org
you can see the itenerary, route guide and riders blogs from last year.
