Classifieds / Southern Tier maps

For sale, Full set of ST maps.  1,6 & 7 are unused, the rest unmarked and in good condition.  To save weight and bulk, also included are copied portions of Michelin maps 175,176,177 (1 inch:20 miles) with the route marked on them.

According to the route maps for the Southern Tier, there is no potable water at Gila Hot Springs.  Can this be consumed after filtration?  I have a SURVIVOR FILTER PRO?

Travelling out of Phoenix, E bound, the route goes to Globe via Jake's Corner.  Why does it not go via Apache Trail?  It looks a much more interesting route and there seems to be littlle traffic.

General Discussion / B&M cache battery - again.

I've read the previous entries on this topic and I have similar problems.

I run a Garmin GPS and when I stop, the unit closes down.  I got the cache battery to overcome this and separately, charge my 'phone.

It worked well at first, particularly the GPS but then I noticed my 'phone not charging then my GPS would attempt to shut down when static and  finally it flashed all the time when I stopped rendering it unusable, unless disconnected.

I proved the battery to be the cause.  I connected the GPS directly to the battery and it proved to be an intermittent power source, rectified when I connected the battery's USB to my PC.   It worked faultlessly.   I'm contacting my supplier - Rose bikes in Germany.

General Discussion / Who's driving the increase in Cassette cog numbers?

I know it's a bit late in the day, but I've finally realised that my numerous 9speed set-ups will become obsolete (at least the quality stuff) in due course. I get the feeling that its the manufacturers who are forcing this upon us.

Am I alone with this view? What can be done to retain good-old 9 speed, if indeed that's what we want? I was content with 8 speed at one time and in my youth, aspired to 10 speed, but that was 2*5.

Are there cyclists out there who have actually requested this change? Plenty are embracing it but is it because of a perceived improvement, the reduction in choice or just owning the latest stuff?

Let's see where this gets to. If I'm classed a stick-in-the-mud then so be it, but at lest I'll know I'm in the minority. But if I'm not a minority case, what are we to do - who's the customer? Manufacturers should always be asking themselves this except in this case, the main 3 are trying to outwit each other at our expense and my irritation.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Garmin error message

I have a Vista HCX and have inserted a GB topo card.  It shows as much as I'd expect but when trying to get it to take me somewhere, I got the message  "route calculation error: no roads near destination" even though the road shows on the map on the screen and I know it really exists.

My Euro, non-topo will direct me when I insert that card.

Is the GB one capable of providing a route, as requested and if so, what do I need to do to make it work?

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Copy maps

I have a Vista HCX and a have just bought a C Nav North America NT micro card which works as soon as it is installed - no codes etc.  I've tried to copy it as a back-up but it doesn't work.  I have a GB Topo, similarly copied, which does work.  Am I missing something?  Will it work?

Routes / Route suggestions request

I'm contemplating visiting Death Valley and Grand Canyon Village (south rim), over a 3 weeks period around March next year.  Camping is my preferred accommodation.  Open to suggestions, but I'm considering Las Vegas as a start/finish as I'll be travelling from the UK.

How can I join these locations with a reasonable cycle route.  Any other advice is welcome.

Routes / Sierra Cascades - in the begining

I fly to Vancouver to start this route and I'm looking for a camp site or cheap B&B (I just need somewhere to sleep for the night), en route to Sumas.  I prefer to be near Langley for this as I don't expect to get out of the airport until 2030.  I can then get a bus.

Looking forward to some help as searching the web has so far failed me.

I have hesitatingly gone to print here not least because I'm still in discussions with Ciclosport (I think) but I'm also very frustrated with them and want to share my experiences with anyone thinking of buying their products.

I bought one of these over a year ago after losing my previous one when the rubber band holding it, broke. That model, the forerunner to this one, plugged directly into a PC for efficient data transfer.

This latest one only connects via a dongle, which has to be bought separately, and it’s not cheap.

The dongle is my main cause for concern – I’ve not been able to transfer any data to any of 3 lap-tops and 2 PCs (one of which is only a month old) and I have 2 dongles.

What has not helped is the completely useless customer service from the company. I have e-mails galore and have been in touch by phone and got no replies to most requests. I find this company very difficult to work with and very unreliable. On top of this they have failed to help me resolve the problem. Individuals seem nice and helpful but fail to follow-up on promises or reply to requests.

As well as the data transfer problem, the unit failed to start after a stop and would only start after following a certain procedure (it should start easily). My unit was replaced but has not been extensively used yet. It also was unreliable over about 10000 feet (been to high altitude) and would frequently cut out.

I have lots more details on the problems I have had and will willingly share them with anyone interested - e-mail address supplied

In summary, stay away from this company and its products if you want reliability and anything approaching good customer service.
