General Discussion / Self Supported Touring Schedule?

Thanks for the input, folks.  It looks like I'll have to be a bit more flexible in the way I plan my tour.  Just reading about how you guys have your trips organized makes me want to take a long weekend and go on a tour now!  Unfortunately, work and family calls...  :-(

I was just curious how people planned/scheduled their tours when not going with a tour group.  I am a pretty organized person by nature, and I could forsee myself mapping out the whole trip with specific stopping points every day.  I just wondered if that's the way that most people do it.

Also, if you a regimen oriented person, like myslef, how many hours do you actually plan to be in the saddle a day?

One more question...Do most of you ride for a few hours in the morning(before the sun is most intense) and finish the ride in the early evening(before dark)?  That's kind of the way I had planned my days.  The only downfall would be that my rest period in between rides would have to be somewhere at least mildly interesting.
