General Discussion / Help find serial number
« on: February 25, 2007, 08:36:11 pm »
I restored a Miyata Cross 100 and it looks absolutely great. My wife suggested that I register the bike with the police department. Well, I have gone over the whole frame and have found no number. I did find, 1/4 0f the way up the downtube stamped into the downtube "SM" It is not a small frame since it is a 62cm. Most bikes have the numbers on the bottonm of the BB housing--No such luck. Can anybody shed some insight on my serialnumberless bike ?

General Discussion / Possible trip from Maine to San Francisco
« on: August 31, 2006, 11:41:50 pm »
I have only been riding for two years and am 65 years old. Currently I ride varying loops on relatively hilly terrain about 15 to 20 miles a day. I have no problem doing 70 miles a day 3 days in a row. Have done the Trek Across Maine twice. Wife wants to see the USA but does not ride. She would like to drive a van type RV, like a VW Westfalia, 75 to 80 miles a day--obviously we would take some days off--and I would ride my bike. The question is what to ride. One bike is a Fuji Finest-AL with a carbon fork and a Shimano 105 Grouppo 52-42-30 Triple,12-25 Nine speed. The second choice is a 1984 Univega Competizione with a Shimano Sora Grouppo, 52-42-30 Triple,12-27 Eight speed. The Fuji is obviously faster, but the Univega is more comfortable since it is Tange Chromealloy. I won`t be carrying panniers or pulling a trailer. I`ll probably have a rack with a top bag for rain gear etc. I would like some feedback as to which bike is appropriate or if neither one is. Both bikes have 700x23C tires and fairly light wheels. Both bikes are in like new condition. We are planning the trip for May 2007.

General Discussion / Camping on private land
« on: August 29, 2006, 08:08:17 pm »
Met a fellow riding from Anacortes WA to Bar Harbor ME. He said that Maine was the Hilliest terrain on his whole trip and also had the worst roads. I agree. What did distress me, however was the exorbinant rate he paid to pitch a tent in a campground. He was charged the same rate as if he had a motorhome. Is there some way we members of Adventure Cycling could come up with a list of people who would allow cyclists to camp on their property? My wife and I have spent the past 14 years cruising 80,000 plus miles in a sailboat, Fortunantly we were able to anchor for free on most ocassions. My reading is that this does not apply to cyclists. I live very near Rte 1,3,and 52 in Maine and would certainly not mind if a cyclist wanted to pitch a tent in my yard. Maybe there are others across the country who feel the same way.     Alex

General Discussion / LOarge Miyata Cross Bike
« on: August 27, 2006, 05:41:30 pm »
I was given a Miyata Cross bike that is a bit large for me. I normally ride a 56cm Fuji Custom pergormance oriented road bike. I like the Miyata and the way steel feels--a sweet ride. Am ok once I`m on the bike. I would like to go touring--this bike has it all, panniers, lights, fenders, etc. Some people in our club(racing oriented) advise me to get a bike the right size with indexed shifting. This bike has Suntour deraillers, triple crank, and a very low six cog casette. Would this be a good touring bike? It is in exceptionally good condition. I have only been biking two years, did the Trek Across Maine twice, and ride 10 to 15 miles a day. I`m also 65. Any advice would be appreciated.
