General Discussion / Re: Use the "Mark Read" button, people!
« on: January 18, 2018, 03:56:05 pm »
I apologize for the delay in responding to this thread and for the slow response to the general recent behavior on the forums.

I think that we do need to keep in mind that each participant is coming from a different place and is not necessarily here to cause trouble or waste others time. The purpose of this forum is to create a community where we can share knowledge an inspiration about bicycle touring. My hope is that everyone can follow the golden rule of treating others how they would like to be treated and not have to resort to banning participants. If you are not interested in a specific topic or the posts from a specific user please move on to content where you feel you can contribute to the community.

That being said, if you go to your forum profile from the menu at the top of the screen there will be an additional menu to Modify your profile where there is an option for Buddies/Ignore list. From there you can add users that you wish to ignore. Adding users to the ignore list will allow you to carry on in the forums without having to read their posts.

I ask all members of this forum to keep this a place that welcomes all members new and old and helps to inspire people to travel by bicycle. It takes effort from each of us to get along and keep this from becoming like many other places on the internet.

Routes / Re: Southern Tier 2017 Thread

Just finished the ST last week, on an ACA tour.  What a fantastic adventure.  Below is the link to my blog of this epic journey.  As this was my first bike tour ever, I was so moved that I will be doing other routes about every two years, giving the alternate years to my love to vacation as she sees fit!  2018 will see an RV caravan adventure to Alaska!

Thanks for sharing your blog. Sounds like it was a fantastic trip!

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Re: Garmin Edge 520
« on: August 23, 2017, 05:35:08 pm »
I searched this forum for info regarding the Garmin Edge 520 and found nothing.  I'm considering a purchase.  Is this unit compatible with AC maps?  Will it hold data sufficient to navigate a typical AC 1-2 week tour?  Many thanks.
I have not personally tried the Edge 520, but looking at the specifications for the device you should be able to load the digital data .gpx track files and display it on the base map. I'm not positive it will handle the service way points or at least all of them. This specific unit is geared more towards training than touring but I do think you will be able to use it to the follow the route track.

A more in depth review that really covers all the details and also compares the unit to the 8xx and 1000 series can be found here:

ACA Mobile Route Apps / Re: Turn by turn directions
« on: July 24, 2017, 11:52:42 am »
Both the mobile apps and the digital data packages use GPX track files. They do not provide a cue sheet with turn by turn directions. As you mentioned, you can use a third party app such as RideWithGPS to create turn by turn directions if you prefer to not follow the track on the map.

Is all of the Missoula-Hamilton bike path like it was in 2009, when there was a stop sign for bike traffic at Every. Single. Side. Street. And. Driveway?

I can think of a very few stop signs for bike traffic between Missoula and Hamilton on the path. Cyclist should be very aware of vehicles turning onto side streets from the highway as they don't always notice cyclists on the path.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Re: Strava as GPS device
« on: July 18, 2017, 02:11:06 pm »
I would like to download the routes into Strava, as that provides me with a simple method of moving the routes from one GPS device to another. I use my smartphone to navigate, using the strava app.

When I try to import the sample route data into Strava, I get an error. Each of the 3 gpx files fail. The process I used loads the routes on a PC (through a web browser connected to the strava website).

Any help would be appreciated.

Strava requires that uploaded files include time information so that they can determine time and speed on segments. The Adventure Cycling Association digital data files do not include time information as they are not based on a single individual's recorded activity. Strava does not support .GPX files without timing data. More info is available here:

ACA Mobile Route Apps / Re: Downloading issues

Hi James,
After reinstalling the app, make sure you go into the "Online Catalog" menu for the app to refresh the purchased and downloaded items from a previous install. Let me know if that helps. I'm currently able to download the offline map data without error on my Android device.

Aah.  I also have a new email address and even thought the app transferred with the purchase it didn't include the maps.  I used the new email address so it didn't recognize that I had already purchased the map.  I finally figured out how to put in the old address and I was able to retrieve the maps I paid for previously.  Thanks.

Glad you got it working and thanks for letting me know everything is now OK!

I bought a new android phone and was charged to reinstall the maps.  I did not see a restore purchase option.  I have the Samsung 8+.
Is the new device using the same Google Play account that the previous device was using?

That's exactly what's happening. In fact, a couple of segments previously showing on my iPad dropped off.  I just purchased a Pacific Coast section the other day on my iPhone and it won't show up on my iPad.  The Restore purchase function doesn't appear to have any effect.

If a map section you have already purchased is missing from a device using the same iTunes account you can retrieve it by repurchasing the map. You should not be charged. Here are the steps:

You will be shown the $4.99 price and after you agree, you will be told it's free and it will download (that order is weird, but that's how the AppStore works). If you get charged for the 2nd download let us know and we can refund that 2nd purchase if you shows us the 2 confirmation emails.

We are looking into the "Restore Purchase" and should have it sorted out in the next update.

I'm checking in with the developer on this issue and will reply when I have more information.

If both devices are using the same iTunes account, when you go to purchase the data on the additional device it should recognize that you already own the route section and not charge. If you are not experiencing that let us know.

It sounds like you don't have an app on your iPhone that is able to display the digital track (.gpx) files. There are many apps on the market that are able to display the digital track files, but we recommend either Good Reader or Easy Trails.

We have a complete set of instructions for using the digital data packages on iPhones and iPads located here:
https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/digital-data-for-devices/tracks/mobile-devices/ios-devices/

Hope this helps!

Thanks for providing more detail. We will look into it further on our end and try to replicate the issue.

To show the elevation profiles on the map you must define the starting and endpoints before clicking the elevation profile button. Do you have both the green and red endpoints defined? Are you getting an error message after clicking the elevation profile button? When you are unable to display an elevation profile is it always in the same section of the route or is happening randomly? Can you let me know the starting and endpoint you are trying to use so I can try to replicate the issue on this end?
