It might be "ideal" if it was still available.

General Discussion / Re: Hit by uninsured motorist
« on: June 02, 2011, 06:01:04 pm »
In California, your home owner's or renters policy will cover property damage caused by a motor vehicle. No point in getting a lawyer involved unless you feel that you are being treater unfairly by your insurance company. Your uninsured motorist will pay a resonable amount for pain and suffering and your home owner's will cover the property.

Which 26" tires would you use for Prudhoe Bay to Mexico via the GDBMR? There is about 2100 miles of pavement between the end of the gravel Dalton Highway and Banff for the start of the GDMBR. Use one set of tires such as the Marathon Dureme or Extreme? Or change to something like the Supreme in Fairbanks for the 2K miles of pavement to Banff and the start of the GDMBR?

Gear Talk / Re: Rohloff hub

I have often wondered if the long term durability of the bottom bracket and the rear hub will be reduced due to the high tension that is needed to keep the belt from slipping.

Start by going very light. He carries 4 panniers and all the stuff. You take only a large seat pack large enough to carry a jacket, food, and your wallet. Do not separate. By you not even having a rack and rear panniers, you will save about 6 pounds. He is your sag wagon. This arrangement will only work if you are willing to go light. Here is an idea for the seat pack I am talking about from Carosel Design Works  http://www.flickr.com/photos/carouseldesignworks/3666941699/in/set-72157611514005907

Interesting to see how this all works out. Seems quite a few bikes use their rings and cranks.

I've read a few reports on other sites of issues with index shifting on 9 speed barcons and Shimano XT/XTR rear derailleurs. Any of you experience this?

Gear Talk / Re: Are you happy with your disc brakes?
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:44:48 am »
For those interested in this topic, I aslo asked the same question over on CGOAB  http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/forum/board/message/?o=RrzKj&thread_id=209814&v=W&page=1&nested=0

At this point it seems most responders are happy with their disc brakes.

Gear Talk / Are you happy with your disc brakes?
« on: April 03, 2011, 07:46:41 pm »
I've read the discussions here and on many other sites debating the merits of V-brakes vs dics brakes, so please lets not do that again. What I would like to know is for those of you that have disc brakes or use to have disc brakes are you : 1. Extremely happy, disc brakes are awesome? 2. Satisfied but think they are sometiimes a hassle? or 3. Would go with V-brakes if I could have a do over?

Gear Talk / Any advantage of using 4 vs 2 panniers?
« on: March 17, 2011, 08:58:55 pm »
Lets say that all your stuff will fit in 2 rear panniers such as the Ortlieb Back-Rollers. Is there any advantage of using 4 smaller panniers such as 4 Front-Rollers to distribute the weight more evenly between the front and rear wheel?

Gear Talk / Re: Co-Motion dealers in Southern California

CyclesafeSr, I am somewhat familiar with Hi Tec bikes in San Diego and know that they really cater to the high end racing crowd, which is what I wanted to avoid, but a 10% discount on a $4 or $5k purchase is quite an incentive!! Could you elaborate on the "muddling communications and contantly trying to BS" so I am better prepared to deal with them.

Anyone have any experience working with any Co-Motion dealers in Southern California fitting a touring bike?

Thanks all for the info. I have used canister stoves in all types of mountaineering/climbing adventures in all types of weather and altitudes and didn't want to give up the ease of use and the ability to cook inside the tent in nasty weather. I know that many ultra light types are now going with pop can stoves, but I prefer to use canister stoves if possible.

Before I started a new thread I did perform a search on canisters. I found nothing of relevance to my question, hence the new thread. If you found a thread concerning the availability of canisters along the Pacific coast of the US and Canada, could you kindly post a link?
