Happy R - Don't get sucked into that one...maybe one day you will be the first one at a bus stop and they will show up and then given that most mass transit buses that have bike racks have only two slots, and its first come, first served....ya know!?  Also catching them on a hot day without water while you have water bottle cages? Maybe you see them leaving a mall on a Sunday when the lots don't have many cars and you can in aviation terms, "bounce them". All the Best Mark of the Dalton Boys

Thank you Hans, but you are no slouch yourself. Just became a member a year ago. It was a natural expansion from my "Rails-to-Trails" life and I've not been disappointed. So many places to go... Kindest Regards  Mark of the Dalton Boys

General Discussion / NZ - A Gr8 place to tour!

I must echo the sentiments made by the Kiwis. At any Holiday Park (found on both North and South Islands), the fee for camping is $10.00NZ per night. All of the campgrounds were not just clean...they were sterile and an absolute joy!! I suggest Lake Wanaka on the S. Island. Unlike the Aussies, there are no nasty deadly critters, just a biting fly that with some DEET won't bother, but when they bite you really know it! Also a parrot whose name escapes now but delights in tearing/biting anything rubber. Last two things....try the whitebait sandwich, and remeber as a "Yank" and during their "Super Bowl" for rugby, the answer is "...I'm for anyone who plays against Auckland". I happen to prefer Canterbury. All the Best.

General Discussion / Dogs on the Great Divide?

Emotional benefit of having dog with one during bikecamping - priceless   Using a trailer to haul said dog - doable  Putting dog on BoB - disaster in waiting. I own an IBEX and the brochures provided are pointed....no children, or pets in BoB's. Virtually any two wheeled trailer will do nicely. Regards  Mark of TheDaltonBoys

From my trip on the White Pine RailTrail....absolutely correct. Michigan Parks will not turn away hikers, or bicycle campers. My experience was with the park in Cadillac,MI. the place is great!!

General Discussion / Looking for Bike Bag for Amtrak or Greyhound?
« on: May 05, 2005, 03:29:32 pm »
Blair is absolutely right on...AMTRAK not an issue. Likewise not one problem with my bicycle on AMTRAK. The ONLY issue is that one's bike must be loaded/unloaded at any station that has "baggage handling" service. Not many do so when planning, even though you may find a station at your starting/ending point it does not mean you can load/unload your bike at those specific stations. General Discussion / Why are you here?

jlsccjan - Your desire to learn this wonderful, organic, and efficient mode of transportation is half of what there is to learn. If an old 55 y.o. (me)  can get this stuff....lets just say that I'm semi-brilliant so you all must be brilliant. Don't stop, learn it slowly so as to enjoy, and cycling in any capacity is not necessarily based on the "...no pain, no gain" principle. Enjoy thje Voyage!!  Mark of the Dalton Boys

I'm here because 6 years ago I "backed into" going car-less. It wasn't a beam through the clouds type of epiphaney...just ended up on my bike so much while waiting for my car to be "repaired" that I finally realized enough to ask the question...why do I have a car? This will be a forced point in the future because...last time I checked, there is no pipeline from outer space to replenish fossil fuels.

When my brothers and I did the Katy in MO. not only were most Park Rangers, Law Enforcement personnel helpful when asked, but on two occasions they called to towns ahead to tell them we were coming through, then let us know where we would be camping, and on one of those occasions, the local constabulary would  be waiting on us...to show us how to re-secure the park bathrooms after we left. Yeah....just ask and allow time at the end of the day to ask.
