I too dream of opening a little hostel / cafe / bike shop / bookstore at some nice bike route intersection. And also of riding the Natchez Trace.

How about where the Natchez Trace crosses MS route 25, near Tishomingo. The Underground Railroad route splits/joins there, I think. Looks like there is an ATV shop there.

Yeah, ride through all these places first, then you can make a decision where to plunge in. What fun!

I bought a Thorn Nomad from SJS in England and had it shipped to the USA. I forget all the charges exactly but it was like $400 shipping and then 11% import duty which was another $400 or so. Not cheap! But it's a really nice bike, and those cost a lot!

Before I sprang for the Thorn I was getting very close to buying a Koga Miyata - but their relationship with their US distributor fell apart somehow. Anyway with the Thorn I had more flexibility on the build details, so I am happy enough as things turned out.

I'm riding on Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 26x2 tires. They roll quite well. Wider tires are not all the same!

But don't we really need some published figures on rolling resistance? Of course it depends on tire pressure, load, road conditions, etc. But any sort of measurement would surely be better than shopping blind!

I have the nose high on my Brooks saddles. Here is a shot of my bike with a Brooks Flyer saddle. I just keep gradually raising the nose until I feel comfortably on my sit bones. I think it will depend on handlebar height. I have another bike with a very upright posture and on that the saddle nose is even higher. I bet with very low handlebars then one would probable want the nose flat or even lower.
