« on: December 19, 2011, 05:21:41 pm »
I live north of the phoenix area and I am going to be riding from here to the Texas area on the southern tier.  I am planning on leaving around the 1st of March 2012 so if you know when you are leaving maybe be can ride together for awhile, I am tent camping and maybe a hotel or two.  Let me know.  I am 60 years old and in good shape I am a retired fireman.  Plan on doing around 60 a day depending on conditions and terrains.

Routes / st from phoenix starting March 1th, 2012
« on: December 18, 2011, 09:18:04 am »
I am considering traveling from Phoenix, AZ starting March 1st, 2012 and riding the southern tier to Texas where my brother lives and having him bring me back home when he visits me later that month.  If anyone is traveling at that time or would like to come along let me know.  Doing around 60 each day depending on the weather and conditions, camping, hostels and maybe a hotel or two and just enjoying the ride.  I am 60 years old and in good shape but extra company would be great, I will be pulling a trailer with all my gear gear.    Also I can adjust a few days either way so if you can, or you will be on the route before or a couple days later let me know.  Forrest

General Discussion / Re: School Project on cycling
« on: October 03, 2011, 07:13:04 pm »
Took your survey, however you can not judge if cycling is a better way to commute because there are to many variables.  First, most places that I ride or would like to ride have no safe bike lanes, traffic is worst during the hours that I would like to ride.  Shoulder are not well maintained usually very rough and full of debris that come from the cars and trucks causing many flat tires.  Just because we have bikes does not make it a better mode of transportation.  Many jobs are located far from home these days and it usually takes the average ride about 1 hour if conditions are ideal to cover a 15 mile stretch.  Carrying items are very difficult also which would require you to add some sort of saddle bags or panniers to carry your stuff, thus this slows you down and can be problematic while riding.  Therefore I would say that for the majority of riders it is more for leisure and sport than a form of transportation, everything can not be green and as far as the globule warming aspect it is a farce and has not been proven it is a weather cycle that we go through not something that Al Gore believes is man made.   ;D

Gear Talk / Re: BOB Trailer Ibex storage versus YAK
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:16:10 am »
I have just purchased a Topeak trailer and it is great.  It is the Same design as the bobs but it has a couple of better features than the bob.  First there it a molded solid protective plate inside the trailer that keeps the road dirt off the bottom of the water proof bag, bobs does not.  Second the quick connect couplers are very easy to use and you don't have to worry about carter pins and such as you do with the bobs.  the trailer with the bag weights only 13lbs.  I now have about 500 miles on my and have had no problems at all.  Look up the Topeak journey trailer and you will also see that it cost less that the bobs and is  built just as well.  It will hold 70lbs of gear, I have everything I need in the trailer and I am only at 55lbs which includes the trailer and bag weight, take a look at it before you buy a bobs...

Gear Talk / tourning with different size tires front and back
« on: September 16, 2011, 03:45:12 pm »
I am towing a trailer and just switched to 700x28 tires on my bike (the trailer tires is 16x1.75) and this made a huge difference in control from the 700x23 I was running.  My question is has anyone during touring used different size tires on the front and back.  If you have is it better to use a large one on the rear and keep the 28 on the front.  I am not using panniers just a trailer and there is not weight issue.  Also if you have used different air pressure between the two.  I have been told that a larger on on the front may give me a few problems with corners.  Please let me know if you have any experience with this.  Thanks

Gear Talk / Re: "Converting" a hybrid bike
« on: August 25, 2011, 09:53:59 am »
You are fine, I have a hybrid and it works great.  Don't spend a lot of money on something you don't need.  Consider pulling a trailer they handle better in the wind than panniers.  Either way your bike will be fine.
