South Atlantic / Re: Safety in Florida
« on: January 12, 2016, 02:44:30 pm »
Florida drivers have a really bad press, much of it deserved.  However I have cycled all over Florida and never had any problems.  Admittedly if I can I ride on the side walk or as far over as possible.  But I do that everywhere, self preservation.
You are absolutely correct in saying bright colours but imo a mirror is the most important thing that will keep you safe.  Gives you a chance to control the lane especially in town but also to just get off the road if unhappy about the vehicle coming up.
Beware of those rented motorhomes, often driven by people unused to a large vehicle.
But have fun Florida is a great place to ride with some fantastic trails.

Hi and thanks for the trail info, unfortunately slightly too north for my planned route as eventually need to head back to Washington DC and fly home.  But it was very interesting and will take another look at my route from Pittsburgh.

Planning to ride the C&O and GAP in June followed by a tour of Pa therefore I don't want to change my wheels but would like a wider tyre if I can fitted on the existing wheels.  Then swap back to my road tyres once I leave the GAP.  Doesn't need to be super wide just a bit more to ride the trails.

This I should know but don't.  I have 700x32 tyres on at present what are the widest tyres I can fit on on this size rim

Routes / Staying in Leesburg VA

Hi I will be heading into Leesburg Va on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail heading for the C&O Trail.  Can you recommend somewhere to stay please in Leesburg or on the road out.  Have been looking at motels but they all seem to be on non ridable roads.

Routes / Custis Trail into Washington
« on: October 06, 2014, 10:19:02 am »
Hi flying in from UK and needing to get from Washington Dulles Airport into Washington DC and planned to use the WOD trail and pick up the Custis Trail.
When I Google Custis Trail the only thing that comes up is all about the crime committed on the trail.  Can someone give me the low down on using this trail please.

Yes spot on thank you RW loved that quirky town

Trying to remember on the ST a small town with a Yacht Club that has no water or boats but is registered as a Yacht Club.  Stayed there while passing through but lost all my pics and wondered if anyone can remind me where it is.  Driving me mad trying to remember.

I doubt if you are going to have any problem wearing cycling clothes anywhere (different for women in some Muslim countries) the point I made is if you are dirty, smelly and downright disheveled then being on a bike does not not make it ok if you want to go in regular places and meet people.
I remember crossing China 20 years ago and having a great time meeting locals - at one point I met a guy who just stank and was clearly filthy and he wondered why he wasn't getting to meet local people also.

If you are going near any touristy sites you can almost guarantee that public toilet facilities will be available.  I get in there and have a good strip down wash, makes me feel better and as someone has already said you need to keep your own hygiene up as much as possible for your own health.

Over time I have met others who seem to think being really grubby is some kind of badge, but the reality is it often closes doors to you 'cos who wants a dirty scruffy individual as a guest?

You might want to keep a check on train progress here:

They seem to expect it to reopen by April so maybe all OK for you.If you fly into Gatwick you can catch a train straight off the airport terminal.
