Routes / Underground Railway why ...
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:07:41 pm »
Why does the UG on Sect 4 map No43 leave the Ohio to Erie Trail (Prairie Grass Trail - unless I have it wrong) and go via Clifton only to rejoin the trail at South Charleston Oh?  It's not much of a detour but just wondered as Rails to Trails say it is well maintained.

Routes / Need route from Pensilvania to meet up with Atlantic coast
« on: January 12, 2010, 02:06:47 pm »
I know some one will be able to advise.

Heading north on Atlantic Coast ACA route will pick up Trans Am going west, then meet Underground Railway and head north - take the Pennsylvania arm south.

OK can you advise please a) how to get round Pennsylvania & b) a route SE to pick up the Atlantic Coast route north of Washington.  Want to end up in Lancaster.

Many thanks Tony

Routes / Into Boston
« on: January 05, 2010, 01:59:09 pm »
Planning to end Atlantic Coast trip or rather return south after the ride from Boston.  Don't really want to cycle into Boston - does anyone know how the best way might be to get to Amtrak there without riding unless there is a good recognised route, thanks

General Discussion / Getting back to where you started
« on: December 01, 2009, 11:12:42 am »
Hi planning a south to north along the Atlantic Coast in the spring.

I hate flying with the bike and have no intention of taking a Greyhound type trip so my question is. (Plus not sure about airports way up north)

Hire a UHaul type van, and go one way - possibly camp in the back.  Quite like this idea...

Hire a suitable sized car one way

Give the bike to one of the shipping companies and fly (have done this before from San Francisco to Florida and worked OK except this time I don't have the visa time to hang around waiting for it to arrive).

Anyone have advise on the best way would be much appreciated.

Thanks Tony

Routes / Maps other than ACA -
« on: October 12, 2009, 02:50:52 pm »
Hi here from UK.  I'm a big fan of ACA maps and used them whenever touring, however they are limited to the route and I like to have other maps of the area not only to get an idea where I am in the country but to plot excursions and short cuts etc.

Can anyone let me know who prints the kind of maps that cyclists would find useful and where can I buy them.

(really struggled at time on the ST to find any kind of maps while out on the road)
Thanks Tony

Gear Talk / Info on Trainers please
« on: September 24, 2009, 06:16:34 am »
So as the winter here in UK draws in need to continue to train ready for Florida to Vancouver next spring.

Can anyone give me advice on trainers - have decided against a roller set up.  Looking at a budget trainer as don't need anything fancy - just something to sit on and keep riding fit and break in new Brookes saddle!

Thanks Tony

Routes / SE to NW or NW to SE - ?wind direction
« on: September 08, 2009, 04:34:44 pm »
Trying to find what would be the most favourable way to go between Florida  and Vancouver and not have to battle head winds all the way. Is is heading north or start from Vancouver?

Planning to leave mid April 2010
Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of this?  Be very grateful for any pointers.

Thanks Tony

General Discussion / Motel/hotel discount
« on: July 20, 2009, 12:03:41 pm »
On recent tour I used hotels & motels, had I been a member of AAA I could have got a discount - just wondered if anyone has ideas on how to get discounts as coming from UK and not member of AAA I had to resort to fantasy reasons ie senior (actually thats not not a fantasy) being a member of SOLMOB (Silly old man on a bike) even when I explained what it meant and that I was the only member having made it up I did get some discounts.  One time a receptioonist said it didn't matter as long as I was a member!  and being a veteran but not from a USA conflict - we have plenty of our own.

Seriously does anyone know if we get discounts beinga member of ACA?  If not maybe they could take it up.

Routes / Advice please on best route
« on: July 14, 2009, 01:34:38 pm »
This is an outline plan - would appreciate any comments or better route as still at the start of my planning.
Orlando to Mobile - no probs done this mostly already

Mobile follow "Underground" to "Lewis & Clarke "
Follow this north west to Fort Peck Montana and pick up the "Northern Tier" until I can head north to Vancouver.

Easy eh?  Seriously am open to anything but has to be road, not too keen on off roading.

Thanks Tony

Routes / Vancouver to Florida or the other way?
« on: July 12, 2009, 01:11:35 pm »
Setting off in April 2010 to cross diagonally - for the most help with wind which would be the best direction NW to SE or SE to NW.

Any hints on best routes as plan to loosely follow some of the ACA route maps.

Just finished Southern Tier - awesome.

Thanks Tony

General Discussion / Long distance cycling and supliments
« on: January 27, 2009, 02:57:57 pm »
Any advice on which, if any, supliments you take on long distance riding?  Especially where a good balanced diet might be hard to find. Or maybe something like creatine?

What are yor thoughts? Have to say haven't ever used them before but getting a bit older now.
