General Discussion / Re: Cross Country on a recumbent bike
« on: December 31, 2012, 03:58:09 pm »
Maybe you can gleen some ideas/wisdom from my journal; www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/rayandruby. I rode cross country this year on a recumbent trike pulling a trailer most of the way. For me, alone time was fine but I also enjoyed having a riding partner later in the trip. Try not to keep to tight a schedule so you can take time off as needed to enjoy interesting areas and the people you meet. Thanks for your service, be safe and good luck with your trip.

I started doing some touring 2 years ago with an ICE Sprint tadpole style trike and I can say touring on a trike is fun, very stable and extremely comfortable. I use ortlieb panniers which sit low on the rack where I keep the heavy stuff. I also use a rackpac on top of the rack with some lighter stuff. I am planning to start a cross country trip this may on my trike, can't wait. Try it, you'll like it!

General Discussion / trike riding the transam and rumble strips
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:50:16 pm »
I am planning a cross country ride this year on my recumbent trike and am considering the transam route. I am interesting in knowing how much of the route has rumble strips that would make it difficult for a trike when traffic is heavy. I can stradle the strip if it is narrow and the shoulder is a few feet wide and I don't mind taking the lane if traffic is light.

Any info is much appreciated especially would like to hear from other trikers, thanks.

Bike route 9 from Poughkeepsie south, not so good. Lots of traffic and barely a clean shoulder in many areas.
