Can someone here recommend a descent, durable, and not too expensive bike box or carrier.  I need a box for my bike as I intend to cross the "pond" in the not too distant future.

Routes / North American Continent to Russia via the Alaskan Bering Staights

Have been thinking about a tour into Russia via the Alaskan Bering Straight.  Does anyone know if it is possible to cycle from the South of Alaska to the Bering Straights area, and then boat or ferry across into Russia?  Am planning a RTW tour and seeking to minimize crossing the "ponds" with air travel.  I live in San Diego.

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks again for everyone's excellent and professional advice.  But what about the Koga Miyata World Traveler (aluminum).  This touring bike has good reviews, as well.  I will research the Pangea by Co-Motion.

I might add that I do intend to purposely ride off pavement, but I want to be prepared   Will be traveling as light as possible.

Anymore suggestions?

Is the Surly Long Haul Trucker a good choice?  Which model?  "Looks" like a strong bike, but what do I know

Gear Talk / New Touring Bike (RTW)

Can anyone help select the right touring bike (model and make) for a RTW tour?  I know there are several bikes available, and I am an experienced rider, but selecting the BEST bike for long term touring is outside my pay-grade (if you will).  Any price.

General Discussion / MB Touring

Thanks all for the advice.  I am aware that a MB is not the bike of choice for touring, but I am a year-around MBer and want to continue riding my new bike even when not touring.  In other words, I desire the best of both rides in one bike.  And again, I feel very comfortable on a MB, as compared to a roadie.

How about a 21' frame?  Would the larger frame be more stable?  Do manufactures build a frame that can accommodate both a hybrid tire, and a MB one?  And what about balancing a load in the panniers (aka saddle-bags?

Hello!

My name is James and I have been contemplating a RTW bike tour and seek "hardware" advice.

Because I have owned and ridden mountain bikes for several years, like the mountain bike style, and feel comfortable on a MB compared to a roadie (have owned Trek and GT MB's), I would like to purchase a MB that would be right bike for touring RTW.  Does anyone recommend a particular model?  I do not want to have hardware problems on my trip    Price:  3-4k

General Discussion / Tour Planning - Ten months out

My name is James, and I too seek advice advice about a tour.  But I plan on biking around the World on a mountain bike (my favorite).  And I too am from WI (Watertown), and 58!  What a coincident!

Although my touring experience is limited, in 2000  I toured parts of England and Wales.  It was a Great ride and adventure, but my MB (a rather expensive one) was stolen in London.  So make sure your bike is well secured and insured!  Fortunately, my bike was insured, and when I returned to WY I bought a new MB.
