Routes / Boston to Seattle to LA trip advice wanted
« on: July 29, 2009, 09:12:56 pm »
My wife and I used to tour a bunch before we had a kiddo. He's now 10 and we are finally planning a cross country tour for 2010. We plan to do a modified Northern Tier from Boston area to Seattle/Vancouver area then down the Pacific Coast to LA. We hope to depart next June and be at the grandparents in SoCal before Thanksgiving. Our son (who's a strong rider at 10) will turn 12 next fall, but we don't want to push the mileage too much.

Concerns at this point:

-My wife rode across the US twice back in the 80's. I rode the Pacific Coast around same time. (This was before we met). She (and I to a lesser extent) is quite anxious regarding riding on busy roads with our son. Can anyone comment on the Northern Tier and Pacific Coast routes at this point?

-Looking at doing 30 - 60 mile days. Wondering how early we need to get over the Rockies to avoid winter storms.

Thanks, Erik

I'm looking forward to reading posts from the first bikecentenniel. I was 16 at the time and tried to convince my parents to let me go on this ride, to no avail. :(

Martin Kreig (of is going to ride a one of a kind Pennyfarthing big wheel bike 4017 miles across the US. Along the way, he'll be visiting 25 mayors in 25 cities to promote a national bikeway. He leaves from San Francisco and enters Immigrant Pass next Monday, May 11.

and ABC News story on him that ran on May 1st at

It's quite a trip and story. However, due to the economy, he just lost his major sponsor and is working on a shoestring.

He was able to round up an RV to use as a SAG support, but he needs a driver and a videographer to chronicle the journey.

Can you help him? Do you know anyone that would like a BIG adventure?

A discussion area for Colorado Adventure Cycling members and non members to meet, organize rides, and discuss cycling issues relevant to the region. Please keep post in this section pertaining to Colorado. If this board is successful we will be looking to add more states and or regions soon."

I'd love to see a New England section. So, come on, Colorado get going and make a good show of it so the rest of us can get a section! It appears to be all up to you!!! ;D
