General Discussion / WANTED - Kansas City to Austin Texas Best routes and advice for a first timer

So late this up coming summer or early the following summer I am going to be riding out to visit a friend in Austin TX, and was trying to see if anybody knew the best route to get from KCMO to Austin? Or if anybody knew a good site that would help me pick the safest/fastest/most fun route? I am also new to the cross country rides but have been riding bikes for years and years and YEARS, but would also like any info on long haul riding anyone has. Info pertaining to supplies, where to stay, safety cautions, places to find people that might want to join me for the ride, or just any general long haul tips would be awesome.

Hope I get some good feedback and I really do appreciate any and all help.
