General Discussion / Selkirk Loop
« on: September 28, 2021, 01:50:33 pm »
Can anyone provide feedback on the traffic on The Selkirk Loop? Perhaps more specifically US 95 (northbound). We are planning to do the Loop next August. Starting in Sandpoint ID and going counter-clockwise. Someone mentioned to me a concern over many log trucks and traffic on 95 (primary southbound). Would appreciate any feedback.

So, after just completing the Katy Trail- I would DEFINITELY recommend 35’s or larger.
BTW- y’all get out there. It’s a WONDERFUL trail and there’s NOONE out there!!

Wondering if there might be a “preferred” direction of travel on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O?? Currently planning from Pittsburgh to DC but curious if anyone has an opinion otherwise? We can obviously go either way.

Thank you!!
Makes perfect sense.
Seems like that’s the trend these days- regardless of surface- wider is better.

General Discussion / The Katy Trail- What tires?
« on: May 25, 2020, 05:56:47 pm »
We are preparing to ride The Katy Trail in Missouri starting June 7th. We have “gravel” bikes that can accommodate 35’s and more- but we don’t want too big to avoid excess drag. What tires would be recommended?
30’s with Road tread?
35’s with knobby tread?
Thoughts?

General Discussion / Lightweight Locking cable for touring
« on: December 02, 2019, 06:04:43 pm »
Any brand or type preferences for a lightweight cable and lock for long distance bike touring? Needs to be long enough to wrap around 2 bikes and something like a picnic table!?!?

Great conversation. Pros and Cons.
We do not plan on riding at night or super early in the morning. My only real concern is that there may be several (or many) mornings similar to “BikelisciousBabe” where we depart very early and there is fog or very dim light. Probably more to “be seen” versus to “see”. But maybe a little of both.

We will either:
-utilize our current camp headlamps as early morning headlights if needed-
OR
-purchase the very small/light weight (Bontrager?) rechargeable headlight and only use if needed.

We’ve done a fair amount of long distance self supported tours and have had a headlight. But ALWAYS used it just to be seen.
So now trying to cut back and/or eliminate clutter/weight/stuff to keep up with.

Thank you all for your experienced feedback!!

Thank you all. Makes perfect sense.
Headlight is scratched.
Trying to unload weight. Not add it.
Headlamp in a pinch is our answer.

Good point I suppose.
We’ve done shorter tours before and used headlights. Mostly only for better visibility for oncoming traffic. Never used for evenings or mornings.
We have trusty headlamps for the campsite.
We can sure do without the weight of a (battery operated) headlight on board.  Thanks.

We are planning a TransAmerica trip. Self supported. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good headlight? Probably only would consider battery operated to avoid charging concerns.
