ACA Mobile Route Apps / Latest (2/20) App update
« on: February 27, 2020, 11:19:32 am »
The latest update seems to have a change in the way “dropping pins” works to determine point to point distances and elevation profile.   Now, the first pin dropped is the end point, and the second one is the start point.   This “enhancement” is counter-intuitive, and makes the app way less user friendly when using the app to plan upcoming day’s rides.   Previous to the update, the first pin dropped was the start point, and the last dropped was the end point, with direction of travel, gain/loss presented in the way encountered on the road.  The “old way” was way more useful.  Any chance to restore the functionality ?

Wildwood Drive is closed to through traffic 1/4 mile north of its southern intersection with US 101,due to bridge reconstruction.  As of August 5, 2018, there was no walk around option; it looks like it will be closed for several months for construction.  Stay on US 101.

I just found Cycling the Pacific Coast: The Complete Guide from Canada to Mexico book on amazon. and next time that I order on Amazon and I will buy that book

Make sure it's the current Thorness edition. The older ones are fine as a historical artifact, but a bit outdated and not as thorough as the current book.

The First edition of the Thorness book is 2017.  The Spring/Kirkendall book apparently is out of print, as suggested by others.

ACA Mobile Route Apps / New Navigator App/old purchases

How does one transfer/access map segments purchased through the  “old” mobile apps (e.g. Pacific Coast, TransAmerica) into the new Navigator App?

Gear Talk / Re: Best type of saddle (besides Brooks)
« on: December 11, 2017, 11:30:49 am »
I have been using the Gilles Berthoud saddle-the Aspin model.   It is a modern take on a Brooks tensioned leather saddle.   (I think  it is higher quality than modern Brooks saddles) I have used this saddle since 2008, and it has worked very well for me, as well as friends that switched to them.

I have ridden 101 in Washington, as well as 105 south of Aberdeen.
105 is some of my favorite scenery on the Washington segment, and well worth the ride.   Riding on 101 is fine.   Many people don't like the ride across the Astoria-Megler Bridge.   I think it's fine, and worth doing.  The notion of riding across a 4 1/2 mile bridge crossing a river is a cool one, in my mind.     To get to the coast, I've taken the ferry from Seattle to Bremerton, then through Shelton, and Montesano.  There's plenty of back road options there.  Then, either 107 from Montesano to 101, or a brief stint on Hwy 12 to Aberdeen, and then 105.  The 105 route is longer, but the scenery is better.

ACA Mobile Route Apps / Re: Map segments on more than one device
« on: May 19, 2017, 04:29:38 pm »
If both devices are using the same iTunes account, when you go to purchase the data on the additional device it should recognize that you already own the route section and not charge. If you are not experiencing that let us know.

That's exactly what's happening. In fact, a couple of segments previously showing on my iPad dropped off.  I just purchased a Pacific Coast section the other day on my iPhone and it won't show up on my iPad.  The Restore purchase function doesn't appear to have any effect.

ACA Mobile Route Apps / Map segments on more than one device

How does one get maps purchased for the new Apps to show on more than one device?-for example, I would like to have the maps on my iPad for planning, and on my iPhone when riding the route.

General Discussion / Re: Bike touring safety... USA...
« on: May 17, 2017, 11:33:23 pm »
I rode the Northern Tier this past summer/fall.  2 guys, 2 gals.  We never felt unsafe anywhere along the route.  Even riding 4,500 miles, no close calls, or nervous moments.  Only one guy who yelled derogatory words at us.

Routes / Northern Tier to North Lakes route
« on: April 11, 2017, 09:56:11 pm »
KKTice,

I assume you didn't use a hammock.  Did you do the Northern Tier in North Dakota?  Montana?  Do you think finding appropriately-spaced trees for a hammock would be a problem there?

We rode the Northern Tier through Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan; didn't use a hammock-as I recall all the campsites we stayed at had trees although I didn't look as to their spacing. .  Sorry I can't be more help there.

I rode the Northern Tier, north lakes and the Lake Erie Connector last year-I was quite pleased with it.  I enjoyed the UP of michigan, as well as the west shore of the LP .  Ontario along Lake Erie was a pleasant, mostly rural ride which took us to the Canada side of Niagara Falls.

Routes / Coos Bay Bridge Bypass Yes and No?
« on: April 02, 2017, 09:39:39 pm »
Having ridden both 101 and 7 Devils, the 7 Devils is the preferred way. Like John says, The Coos Bay Bridge (McCullough) bridge is just a few minutes to cross.  The OR DOT has been doing renovation work on the bridge; if I recall correctly, they have installed a "Bikes on Bridge" flashing light.

Routes / Re: Place to finish WB Northern Tier ride
« on: January 10, 2017, 06:42:11 pm »
I rode the Northern Tier this year, west to east.  Yeah, the Ferry Terminal at Anacortes isn't the most scenic, but the San Juan Islands are awesome, as is Deception Pass. Lopez Island is considered the "flattest" of the islands, and the locals are friendly.  Orcas is pretty hilly.   The climb up Mt Constitution is a tough one.   We incorporated the Northern  Lakes Route and the Lake Erie Connector, so we rode the UP of Michigan,  crossed the Mackinac Bridge, and traversed Lake Erie along the Canadian side, entering the US again at Niagara Falls.  Northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine were definite highlights of the trip.  The mountain passes of Washington are great too-The scenery at Washington Pass on Highway 20 is pretty spectacular.

Routes / Re: Deception Pass State Park, Washington
« on: January 10, 2017, 06:22:16 pm »
I'm looking at places to end my ride and found Deception Pass State Park and Cranberry Lake Campground.  It looks like a nice site except Google Maps shows a 23.7% grade when crossing the bridge southbound  onto Whidby Island.  Can this be true?  23.7?  We have some steep hills in NJ but I don't think I've ever ridden up anything that steep. 14.5% is the steepest I recall doing and I had to walk part of it one time.
Google is wrong.  The bridge crossing is nearly level.  There are some short hills in and out of the campgrounds, but nothing that steep.
