And I've heard of too many frames being broken by kickstands.

I don't use a kickstand. I have one of those rubber coated wire wraps that I use to lock my front brake and I just lean the bike against whatever. With the brake lever activated and locked, the bike doesn't move. At all.

Jenny, good luck with it! I'm between CH and Pittsboro and have been doing a handful of s short 1 week tours. I'd recommend that if you're new to it, gives a way to do a shakedown cruise for systems and gear and whatnot. Not remotely 22, lol, but if I can help with what I know and have figured out the hard way, just let me know.

I would just point out that, even though folks SAY "you won't camp at the higher elevations" sometimes circumstances dictate that you don't get to  choose. You get delayed by several flats in a row, you get a monster cramp that slows you down, you have to go back for something you forgot (heaven forbid - I despise retracing my steps! - any number of things could have you running out of daylight or steam 80% of the way up the mountain, and there you are. Just be aware that it isn't a given, especially if yer an old fat guy like me! There's a reason my trail name is Adagio... :/

I expect it'll be "swear, cry, laugh, and dance", but when yer in the swear/cry phase, remember that laugh and dance is on its way!

I strongly suggest that you go with mittens or three fingered gloves (thumb, first two, last two). This reduces surface area between the fingers that's exposed to cold and your fingers can help keep each other warm

Routes / Re: Hi Everyone! First Timer Cross Country Rider - ROUTES NEEDED

As far as where to stop when you need to quit for the day, I use four options, for free camping:
1. Fire stations, volunteer or otherwise. They are my main camping choice, and about half the time I can stay inside. They are willing to let me shower and use their laundry area. Heck, sometimes they feed me!
2. Stop at a country store and ask if there's "somewhere I can put my tent up for the night" (as opposed to "camping" which sounds... more so) Often folks will let you camp on their property. Or behind the store.
3. Knock on the front door of a house with a large yard and ask them. This is hard to do at first, but folks are often quite willing to let you.
4. Stealth or "bandit" camping somewhere out of the way.

I had the heart attack, which got me going. Good on you for starting before that! Do get a thorough physical!!

General Discussion / Re: Recommendations for a tour beginning in Chicago

I looked at riding from NC to Oshkosh, and found I could put together a nice little route that went up through Ohio and Indiana, etc.... you aren't limited to ACA routes  (as nice as they are!). Figure out where you want to go, how far you can get, and draw a big circle with that distance as a radius. Then see what attracts you! Have fun, and don't forget about fire stations, always a good place to camp for free - and usually with showers!

Lots of great info! Thank you! I'm looking forward to this, though it might have to wait until cooler weather. My body's doing some weird stuff on the last two short (160 - 230 miles) tours I've done in hot weather down here. :/

I'm looking to do this in August as part of a ride from Wisconsin heading east, if I don't ride rte 66 in June (and maybe if I do!). I could use some experience and wisdom about the ride - facilities, camping, etc.

Also, if you're going to follow the Atlantic Coast route, the fire depts in Shallotte and Calabash are great. The fire dept in Conway, SC requires advance notice. In Conway, stay off of 15-501, and if you have to ride that way, stay on the sidewalk. That highway will KILL YOU in Conway!
