Routes / Rte 66, East to West, beginning June 1...
« on: April 04, 2016, 11:47:07 am »
Good idea? Bad idea? How freaking hot will it BE?? A friend is planning that ride and I'm thinking about joining him, if I can get in enough training to start with 60 mile days... and if it's not going to cook my brain into a hockey puck-like cinder.

Comments welcome!

I wouldn't take 17 if I could avoid it. I rode this distance last year, for the most part, and followed the Atlantic Coast Rte. It runs inland, but it's not bad countryside or riding, with the exception of a short bit of road going into Shallotte and a short stretch of 17 going into North Myrtle Beach.

This has worked for me exactly as advertised. Dunno about against bears, though. I'd want to try a controlled experiment first to make sure it didn't sound like prey to them. But for dogs it's top notch.

The right time would not be for the roadway itself, but the eateries along the way. Places were not open or available before which made a bad impression for cycling. This last time restaurants and cafes were open. I would prefer 20 over 90.

90 is the way to go. I would use the Mobile bay ferry west of Pensacola. I strongly advise against trying 90 going west out of New Orleans.
Westinghouse! You're the one who said to go 20! lol! Seriously though, now you recommend 90?

I read somewhere else here that 20 was flatter and quieter, neither of which I have a problem with!

That's pretty much what I'm aiming at for April, but I'll be riding from Wilmington NC to St. Augustine, then across to the gulf on 20/27 (I think 27) and joking up with the ST in northern Florida.

That would be great! I'm sure you'll have fun on the ride. What route are you planning across Florida? ACA says 90 (?) but someone posted that 20 might be the better road.

Thinking about it, I don't think someone not knowing the answer to a question you've asked, and telling you that, constitutes "bad advice", you know? That's just... not knowing.

I'm planning to do this same ride, but I'm going to try and break it into thirds - Atlantic Coast Route, Key West to Maine, then across to Oshkosh Wisconsin. Then Osh to Seattle and down there coast a ways, then down the rest of the coast and across the Southern Tier and back up to NC. I'll do a third per year till done or tired of it... As long as it's fun....

What do you mean by "Louisiana is a tough bicycling state"?
