General Discussion / Re: What can towns offer cyclists?
« on: August 04, 2015, 11:48:39 am »
Thank you for welcoming cyclist into your town. Having just completed to journey, I so looked forward to the towns that welcome cyclist. the town folks seemed to enjoy us as much as we enjoyed spending time and money in you towns.  High on my priority list when I arrive for the evening is a place to take a shower. This could be a town pool, recreation facility, etc. I have no problem paying for the warm shower but would be okay with a cold shower on a hot day.

Priority list - a safe place to pitch a tent, knowing where to dine for the evening and the shower. A place to re supply food items. A location for WiFi would also be nice as well a phone charging location.

If the above services are available, the word travels fast amount the traveling cyclists.

Thanks,

Dreux

Im currently in Danville, Ky and looking to ride home to Guilford, CT. Started in Astoria, OR, and just decided to ride home, Guilford, CT instead of Yorktown.
Can someone suggest the best route to take? The training wheels are off and I'll be off the TA ☺️

Thanks,

Thinking of going off the TA and doing the Katy Trail, which is the best route from KS route 96? Going west to east.

Gear Talk / Re: How heavy is your touring bike (unloaded)?
« on: May 19, 2015, 07:54:44 am »
My Surly CrossCheck with racks, fenders, tool bag, lights, Marathon plus tires weights in at 32 lbs. this seems to be inline with a steel touring bike. I'm somewhat new to long distance touring, but the bike really handles well and is smooth fully loaded.
I use my weight compulsion for my carbon racing bike.

General Discussion / Should I pack an Air Pillow
« on: May 14, 2015, 06:32:52 pm »
Narrowing down my pack list for a TransAmerica ride in several weeks and down to one item in question. I'll be camping 80+% do the time and considering a Sea to Summit air pillow. I've used a stuff sack with a fleece jacket which is okay but looking to the pillow as a treat for a good night sleep. Is it worth 2.8oz's? Anyone use one on a long trip?

Thanks,

General Discussion / How much water to carry?
« on: April 29, 2015, 05:19:14 pm »
Leaving on June 10th west to east doing the TranAm route solo/ self supporting (mostly camping, no cooking) and I'm wondering how much water I should be prepared to carry.
I riding a Surly Cross Check that has 2 standard water bottle mounts along with handlebar bag and rear panniers. I also have the option of mounting bottle cages on the fork where there are braze-ons. I know I throw the Gatorade bottle in the pannier or topside on the rack, but I was thinking the fork mounts would better distribute the weight low and forward. Thoughts?

Routes / Re: TA Route from Astoria to Guilford, CT

Indyfabz - Thank you for the suggested route via Route V. This certainly seems like an excellent option to head back to CT .... limited traffic and signage.  I'll order the UGRR sections as well as the Route V maps and have them as an option. While on my adventure, if okay with you, I may reach out to you for your guidance on camping and food options as I get closer to PA.

Thanks again,

Routes / TA Route from Astoria to Guilford, CT
« on: April 15, 2015, 10:45:54 am »
Excited to have committed to doing the TA this year! Starting early June in Astoria, OR. New to long distance touring so there will be lots of questions to follow. I do have one in particular about routing.

I'll be purchasing the TA map set but have a question about where to finish. I'll be self supporting and riding solo.

Do I finish in Yorktown, VA and have my wife pick me up? Complete the official route. We live in Guilford, CT on the shoreline near New Haven.
Do I go up the Underground Rail Road route north and head east at some point and head home? It would be good to arrive at home and I do live several miles from the water for the traditional wheel dip.
Do I continue east on the TA and head up the Eastern route to head home?

Considerations - I don't have unlimited time so route efficiency regarding distance is important. I want to maximize my tour experience while considering the additional miles.

Any feedback, thoughts in the area of routing will be most appreciated.
