Gear Talk / Re: 5lb “penalty”... what is the cost?
« on: March 27, 2018, 10:20:15 pm »
I tend to agree that the 5 lbs won't make that much difference except on long and steep hills. I know Hilleberg makes a fine product but my experience has been they are a pretty heavy duty, almost expedition quality tent - not  a warm weather tent. They might be overkill for a bike tour.  If you plan camping in warm climes at all you might want to go with a warmer well ventilated, as well as lighter, tent.

Gear Talk / Stored Schwable Marathons
« on: March 25, 2018, 11:43:33 pm »
I posted this earlier in another thread but it may be more appropriate here.

I have some brand new Schwable Marathon 35s stored semi-folded in a box for over a year now. Have I done any damage to them by keeping the boxed up for so long?  I'm hoping to use them on a tour this summer and as you well know, they are not inexpensive.  I'd hate to have to spring  for new ones. Any knowledge about this?

Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: Hotel/motel vs camping
« on: March 25, 2018, 11:21:29 pm »
I always go the camping route. That  doesn't mean that I don't use hotels/motels/hostels on occasion when it's appropriate which is usually weather related or when I just want to get cleaned up.  And then there is stealth camping which can be pretty enjoyable and convenient once you get used to it. And don't forget the opportunity presented by Warm Shower hosts. The hotel/motel route can get pretty expensive if you're on a multi-week trip. Besides, I like meeting people in campgrounds and cooking-my own meals.  And then there is the snob appeal. I feel infinitely superior, rightfully or not, to the hotel/motel crowd. Kind of a rugged  individual type thing - at least in my own twisted mind. But that's just me.    Bottom line is to do whatever you can afford and what appeals to you the most. We're all different. :)

General Discussion / Re: best color for panniers
« on: March 25, 2018, 11:11:39 pm »
To me, it's obvious. Bright  colors such as red, orange or yellow are going to be much more visible. Personally, I  have red panniers for that very reason. I still tour with a high visibility yellow or orange jersey and a very bright blinking red taillight.  I remember pulling in to a campground in Yellowstone during a rain storm near dusk and the campground host said, "Man, we saw you coming a mile away."  I thought that was a good thing.

Thanks guys. They've  been stored in the dark, in the dry and in the cool, but not cold.  I'll take your advice and inspect them carefully.  I've unfolded them.  Hopefully, they'll be OK.

General Discussion / Taiwan or People's Repubic's bikes
« on: March 11, 2018, 09:42:49 pm »
I know that the majority of bicycles in the world today are manufactured in Taiwan and are are generally good to excellent quality.  At least the pricier ones. However, I'm seeing more and more bikes that are made in the People's Republic of China.  I'm not sure they are up to  the standards that the bicycles in Taiwan are. That said, I am considering buying a bike made in mainland China. Any comments?

Gear Talk / Re: Search for the perfect touring bike mirror
« on: February 13, 2018, 08:57:58 pm »
I like this one. It's inexpensive and very flexible so if your bike tips over it, bends rather than brakes. The only problem, as with other mirrors is that bumps in the road  knock it out of whack but it's easily readjusted. Wouldn't tour without mine.

General Discussion / Re: Tips for Cross Country Ride 2019
« on: February 07, 2018, 08:16:28 pm »
Just a word of caution. Beware when crossing the deserts of Utah and especially Nevada in the summer.  It is hot, dry and a long distance between resting spots with virtually no shade.  Start riding early in the morning, before dawn and find a place to wait out the midday heat (not always easy to do) and then when it cools down, ride into the night. And realize that you'll have to carry a significant amount of water, way more than normal, which adds a lot to the weight of your gear. Also, Nevada and Utah are not flat by any stretch of the imagination. There is a tremendous amount of elevation loss and gain. It's constant up and down.  Usually not particularly steep, but relentless. It can be done, but unless you plan well, it can be very difficult, even dangerous, due to the heat.  On the up side, I love camping in the desert.
