General Discussion / Storing Schwalbe Marathons
« on: March 25, 2018, 08:53:11 pm »
I've have some brand new Schwable Marathon 35s stored semi-folded in a box for over a year now. Have I done any damage to them by keeping the boxed up for so long?  I'm hoping to use them on a tour this summer and as you well know, they are not inexpensive.  I'd hate to have to spring  for new ones. Any knowledge about this?

Thanks.

General Discussion / Taiwan or People's Repubic's bikes
« on: March 11, 2018, 09:42:49 pm »
I know that the majority of bicycles in the world today are manufactured in Taiwan and are are generally good to excellent quality.  At least the pricier ones. However, I'm seeing more and more bikes that are made in the People's Republic of China.  I'm not sure they are up to  the standards that the bicycles in Taiwan are. That said, I am considering buying a bike made in mainland China. Any comments?

I like this one. It's inexpensive and very flexible so if your bike tips over it, bends rather than brakes. The only problem, as with other mirrors is that bumps in the road  knock it out of whack but it's easily readjusted. Wouldn't tour without mine.

General Discussion / Re: Tips for Cross Country Ride 2019
« on: February 07, 2018, 08:16:28 pm »
Just a word of caution. Beware when crossing the deserts of Utah and especially Nevada in the summer.  It is hot, dry and a long distance between resting spots with virtually no shade.  Start riding early in the morning, before dawn and find a place to wait out the midday heat (not always easy to do) and then when it cools down, ride into the night. And realize that you'll have to carry a significant amount of water, way more than normal, which adds a lot to the weight of your gear. Also, Nevada and Utah are not flat by any stretch of the imagination. There is a tremendous amount of elevation loss and gain. It's constant up and down.  Usually not particularly steep, but relentless. It can be done, but unless you plan well, it can be very difficult, even dangerous, due to the heat.  On the up side, I love camping in the desert.

Classifieds / FS: Armadillo Crossroad tires
« on: June 24, 2015, 11:22:44 pm »
I have a pair of brand new (almost - less than 30 miles on them) Armadillo Crossroad tires for sale. 700x38c.  Brown sidewalls. I'll take $30.00 a piece ($60.00 total) for the two of them plus $7.50 in shipping costs within the continental U.S. Let me know if  you're interested.  They came on my Trek 520 but my tour is going to be all on asphalt and these are more suited to gravel and dirt for the most part.
