I'm doing the C&O this October. I planned on using a Rivendell Sam with 35's. Is this a good choice or would a mountain bike or hybrid be better?

I am a 62 year old guy who has done quite a bit of riding, both single, groups and organized rides. I am getting to the point in life where I would really like to try touring.
The main restraint is fear. I don't mind riding in moderate, fairly slow moving traffic; but avoid 55mph, no shoulder, heavy traffic situations. i'm the type that never challenges cars. They get every bit of respect that I can throw their way.
This being said, is it my best bet to stick with organized tours such as those presented by ACA? I'm making an assumption that these tours go in areas with limited traffic. If I wanted to do some single bike trips, are there any methods to determine routes where traffic will be minimal?
I realize that these concerns coming from a guy who put in 4000 miles last year seems a bit weird, but it is what it is. Thanks in advance for your direction and ideas.

General Discussion / Cannondale Quick

I have a Cannondale Quick, which is generally marketed as a hybrid. I was wondering if this would be sufficient for the C&O. Would I need stronger wheels? The bike currently is set up with 700X 32's.

Let me first apologize for my ignorance. I have been recreationally cycling for a very long time, but have never done any type of touring with exception of centuries and so forth.
In looking at the C&O tour, it noted that it was fully supported. What does that mean? Does this mean that all of your camping equipment,etc. is transported for you? Does this mean that the only things you have to carry on your bike are miscellaneous items such as repair equipment and spare tubes.
If this information is in another location on this web-site, please advise.

General Discussion / New to Touring

I am planning on doing some light touring this year. Anything that I do in the next two years would be supported. I'm looking for ideas on possibly appropriate bikes. I am going to a number of LBS's for their ideas also. I believe the problem that I will encounter is a lack of interest or knowledge in touring.
The first ride I would like to do is the C&O. Either a hybrid or mountain bike is recommended. I was thinking more along the lines of a Surley CrossCheck with the hope that I could use it for other touring trips later.
I currently have a Fuji road bike which I guess could be used on most supported tours if trail rides aren't included. Does this make sense?
