More gears better! I don't know how old you are but my old knees want a really low climbing gear and not too much difference between each gear when spinning on flats. I just got a Lynskey touring bike and the low gear was a 30x34... ugh, not nearly low enough. By using a Wolftooth Roadlink, I am running a 30x42 low which is WAY better. The spacing between gears is still too high for me but I would have to put on a 3x setup to get that...

In October of last year a lady in her 60's was horribly mauled by some dogs in Ohio. She lost a leg I believe and the other leg was "reconstructed". If you are on FB, you can see the story on Ohio Gravel Grinders.

You might also try Maps.me app. You download the areas you want to look at and then put your phone in airplane mode and the maps are very detailed once downloaded.

13 gear inches is REALLY low! As you said, good luck staying upright. At 19 inches I can keep up a decent cadence at about 4.5 mph (if I'm remembering the numbers correctly).

Hondo, you can run a 2x11 system using GRX600 right now. Shimano says you shouldn't have a lower gear than 30x34 but, with a Wolftooth Roadlink, I'm running a 30x42 with no problems (I have to remember not to go BIG-big because there is very little margin between the derailleur and cassette).

As to question 1, most chamois is "molded" to have channels and grooves where you don't want pressure and padding where you do (over your sit bones). I have yet to see a "saddle pad" that has similar characteristics. The pads seem to just be a blob of padding. This blob allows your sit bones to sag down into that nice cushion but also allows cushion to fill up the places where you don't want pressure. Ouch.
I find I can ride multiple days by using Bag Balm on my crotch when suiting up. The BB has anti-bacterial properties that seem to keep the rash at bay.

Interesting to know. I will keep looking into the western route. We did New Orleans to San Destin last year and the east coast ride from Jax to Key Largo. We are looking to explore another area this time.

Last night I was looking at road closures since I have relatives in Solvang. I heard the "pass road", 127, is closed due to a rock slide. And 101 was closed from the Santa Ynez valley all the way to Goleta. Hwy 101 will probably be opened first I would think but I don't know if that is your route.

You wipe down after every ride without putting new lube on first? I want to make sure I'm reading this right.

Yes, civilization just keeps on creeping along. I sometimes forget how peaceful can be a dark and quiet night.
Well, when the oil in the Basin runs out the lights will start to vanish. It was weird, as a pilot, to watch the transformation in West Texas and East NM, probably the biggest change in the entire CONUS (besides the draining of Lake Powell and Lake Mead).
