Interesting to know.  I will keep looking into the western route.  We did New Orleans to San Destin last year and the east coast ride from Jax to Key Largo.  We are looking to explore another area this time.

Peggy, I'd be interested in your route from NOLA to Destin. I am trying to get myself psyched to do part of the ST but just can't get excited about tenting it...

Last night I was looking at road closures since I have relatives in Solvang. I heard the "pass road", 127, is closed due to a rock slide. And 101 was closed from the Santa Ynez valley all the way to Goleta. Hwy 101 will probably be opened first I would think but I don't know if that is your route.

I wiped down after every ride as other posters said to do, and which I do anyways with any lube I've ever used, and the chain stays relatively clean.

You wipe down after every ride without putting new lube on first? I want to make sure I'm reading this right.
Thanks and way to resurrect this thread!

>>That area was DARK only 20 years ago!>>

Yes, civilization just keeps on creeping along. I sometimes forget how peaceful can be a dark and quiet night.

Well, when the oil in the Basin runs out the lights will start to vanish. It was weird, as a pilot, to watch the transformation in West Texas and East NM, probably the biggest change in the entire CONUS (besides the draining of Lake Powell and Lake Mead).

Fascinating to look at! If you look at the widely dispersed lights in west Texas you can see the Permian Basin oil fields. That area was DARK only 20 years ago!

Trek 520 disc. Masi Giramondo (if you can find one). Salsa Fargo for lots of off road. I splurged and went with a Lynskey Backroad titanium (and now I need a big lock)...

The Fargo and the Backroad give me the best reach to stack ratio allowing for a more upright position and I have them both.

Have you looked at the Lynskey Carbon Adventure Fork? I just got a Backroad and it came with this fork.

How are you measuring your inseam? It really requires two people using the "book between the legs against a wall in sock feet" method.

How do you feel this surface compares to your other SA saddle?

A saleslady at REI told me they don't sell EVent products any more because it works so much better than Goretex that Goretex threatened to pull all of it's products! I'm looking hard at that Showers Pass jacket even though it's pretty pricey.

Your tires should be fine and as a new guy you can probably ask what pressure others are running. Prepare to get your heart rate up near redline and hold it there! And go practice mounts and dismounts! Have fun!

Did the OP go on tour? How did it go? (and don't be ashamed if you didn't!)

If those summer temps don't scare you I'm impressed. I lived for years out there and it gets REALLY hot, dangerously hot... and if you had a mechanical you might wait by the road for hours with no shade for a truck to pass by. Just sayin... Have a GREAT trip and when you get near Louisville, KY send me a message and we'll talk!
