2013 Surly Disc Trucker

This Disc Trucker is a 60cm frame on 700c wheels. The complete bike was built up last winter with all new parts. The only thing left stock is the front wheel and brake calipers. Everything else has been upgraded and changed in some way. It has a complete Shimano XT drivetrain, Velocity Dyad rear wheel with XT hub, Surly rear rack, fenders, Nitto handlebars, Shimano R77? bar end shifters, Schwalbe Marathon tires, etc. It is in great condition and works perfect.

The frame, fork and rear rack have all been powder coated a custom charcoal color. You won't see another one like this. The frame does have a few nicks and marks but nothing crazy. All parts are in good condition. It comes with a cheap WTB seat but I can add a Brooks B17 if needed.

I ordered all my parts last week. I ended up going with mostly XT components because I found killer deals on them. I went with the mountain bike gearing as it seems it will suit my needs for the tour and home riding the best.

Haven't gotten anything installed yet. Once I took the bike basically apart I decided to powder coat the frame. The frame should be done in the next couple days so I can get to putting it all back together.

I really appreciate everyones input on this thread.

I think I may have talked the other 2 guys into being open to camping. We are all planning to bring light camping gear in case we need it.

We are in the process of planning to ride the southern tier route starting in March 2016. We are trying to work out the details and figure some things out.

My main question is can it be done without camping? Are there any long stretches where there are no services? We are going to be unsupported and carrying all our gear. We are basically planning for 50 miles a day but can adjust that once we're riding.

for a touring bike what's the perceived benefit for going with XT instead of mid line Shimano?

Perceived benefit.  Easy.  The top groups, XTR for mountain, Dura Ace for road, are better because they are lighter, higher quality, more expensive, prettier, nicer, etc.  Maybe, maybe it lasts longer too.  Maybe.  Higher groups may use bearings instead of bushings.  Maybe the higher groups have more advanced, newer features.  Maybe.  Higher groups may use more exotic material, titanium and carbon instead of aluminum or steel.  Within the Shimano lineup, they all work very well, last a long time, cost different.  Buy whichever you want.  They all work the same.

I'm not challenging the OP.  People should get what they want.  For an MTB XT makes sense if you want to drop weight and get a precise and immediate shift.  I'm just not sure those two things are very important with a touring bike.  Deore durability will be at least as good as XT-XTR.  It will be a few ounces heavier for the group, won't have the cachet of the other two.  For most riders I don't think there's a questionable return on investment for touring by going with XT-XTR over Deore-SLX.

I really appreciate all the comments and suggestions. I am not completely set on XT, that is just what I'm used to with my mountain bikes. I am still in the process of looking for parts at a great deal. I found a complete Deore groupset that I can save about $200 over the XT kit. It seems like XT may not be worth an additional $200.

RussSeaton - What would pick if you were choosing a gearing set I have listed. What it sounds like to me is 10 speed 42/32/24 but change the smallest ring to a 22. Does that sound right? I could go with 11-34 rear cassette so everything should work.

I am planning to change the bars to a trekking style handlebar so I will be able to run MTB shifters and brake levers.

Let me know what you think about that plan.

The bike is set up with 700c wheels. I am planning to build a new rear rim as well.

I was leaning towards the 9 speed but didn't know if there was much difference going with the 10 speed.

I am going to replace the rear cassette no matter what since it is shot. Planning to buy the entire group to make sure everything is compatible.

I just bought my first touring bike. It is a Surly disc trucker. It is used and has quite a few miles on it. The drivetrain is pretty worn out. I have my first tour coming up in March and want to upgrade some of the components. I am only really looking at Shimano triple cranks.

My question is what is the optimal gearing. I live in the mountains so there are nothing but hills around here. The tour I am planning right now is the southern tier so there may not be tons of climbing but I want to be ready for it. We will be going unsupported so I will be carrying all my gear. I am also 6'4" 270 and put some abuse on cranks.

My options seem to be:
Shimano XT M770 9 Speed - 44/32/22
Shimano XT M780 10 Speed - 42/32/24
Shimano XT M782 10 Speed - 40/30/22

I am planning to buy the entire groupset but not sure what would be the best. The prices for these are all pretty close and in my budget. Is there another set I should be looking at?

I am looking for my first touring bike. I am planning to ride the Southern Tier starting in March next year.

I am very interested in a disc trucker or something along those lines. They seem to be the best bang for the buck that I can find.

I am 6'4" and about 270 so I need something that is large and tough.

Let me know what you have.
