Routes / Re: Can I Cycle the Sierra Cascades route in March?
« on: January 24, 2017, 10:57:11 pm »
Yes, I rode the WE to Pueblo and picked up the transam in September of 2013 and I rode the SC in September of 2015 so I am personally familiar w both the routes.

And when I first answered your post I was thinking of what Carson Pass looked like when I went skiing at Kirkwood in March a number of years ago. And the road looked pretty good then, but that was one time.

Is there anyway you can postpone your trip by a month? March is quite early. As I mentioned in the mea culpa edit to my second post, the chances are pretty good of some pretty unplesant road conditions, even when the skies are blue.

pm

Thanks for your response. Well I was really hoping to leave in March because of my time frame. Do you think there will be times when I wont be able to ride because of snow???
When you say unpleasant road conditions, do you mean ice?? Snow????

You should be able to get over the Sierras on the the Western Express route. It crosses the mountains at Carson Pass which the state tries to keep open year round. There's currently 10' of snow up there and it's open now.

Carson is at 8500' and US50 goes over quite a few smaller passes (6000'-7000') in Nevada so you will be at some significant elevation several times. Make sure you have enough clothes with you to stay warm. And keep an eye on the weather as it can change for the worse in a hurry.

There's 2 very high passes in Utah (outside of Cedar City & Boulder) and 2 more in Colorado (Lizard Head Pass & Monarch) but you don't indicate how far you're planning on riding the route.

pm

I am planning on riding all the way across the country. After Utah, I would like to see Lizard Head Pass and Monarch. That will be in the middle of April....

You seem to know a lot about this route. Have you ridden it before?????

What's up guys. I want to ride from Monterey, Ca east to Yosemite, and then over Lake Tahoe and onto highway 50 in Nevada. Do you guys think that the roads will be open in the middle of March? Or will there still be too much snow???

If you guys don't think that is possible, what about riding through SF and along the Western Express to US 50???

General Discussion / Re: What about travel other country to cycling?
« on: December 05, 2016, 05:21:53 am »
I rode my bike from Rome, Italy to Amsterdam this summer. The only part of the route that was not cycle friendly was a small part of Central Italy. Switzerland, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands were all cycle friendly. I used the Eurovelo website to plan part of my routes. There was a good amount of camping along the way. The Swiss Alps were BY FAR the most amazing riding that I have ever done. Let me know if you have any questions.

General Discussion / Re: Michelin Maps or Google Maps for Europe?
« on: April 16, 2016, 05:23:14 pm »
I purchased the 1:400,000 map for Italy. I want to ride the Green routes, which are scenic, and less traveled (I think)?...

My goal is to ride on mostly quiet, scenic roads. I don't see any street names for the GREEN ROUTE of this map. For example, the map shows the Green Route going along a freeway, but it doesn't give any detail on the name of the street. Do you think this map will give enough detail to help me stay off the main roads? Or should I purchase the 1:200,000???

Thank you for all of the replies. I have one more question:

Should I use the 1:400, 000, or 1:200, 000????

What is the difference???

Why do some people prefer the Michelin maps for Europe, when you can just use Google Maps? I purchased the Michelin maps and I don't see why they are better? Maybe I am missing something....I would love to hear your guys' opinion.

What did you have to do to your bike in order to fit it in the box?

Take off the pedals, turn the handlebars etc....????

Also, what airline did you use?????

I have a couple of questions for you guys...

Did you use the Eurovelo? If so, are there plenty of signs describing where to go?

Did you use a map??? Michelin???

How did you find camping? Was there a lot of campgrounds?

International / I am looking for the FJORDS in Norway
« on: February 19, 2016, 06:21:13 am »
I am going to be biking from Norway to Switzerland this summer. Does anybody know of a route that will take me through the most scenic fjords in Norway? I have looked at Eurovelo but it doesn't say which route has the best fjords.

What happened to the cross-U.S. tour you were going to start this spring?
Thanks for asking. My father recently passed away, so I have a lot family stuff to deal with for the next couple of months. But I am still going to do a cross- U.S. tour next year  :)

If you were riding SOLO, did you ever get lonely? Was there any point in the tour that was mentally difficult to handle because of isolation??
