I am familiar with all the roads of this loop except for the southern most.  All paved, most with good shoulders

Have you and your wife tried a tandem? Only way I've been able to tour.

The year i did the TA (E to W, 2010) , we had such great tail winds in kansas we didn't want to stop! And met lots of other riders along the way. Started in late may. Did have to deal with humidity until we hit the plains.
It's a crap shoot.

I was able to reinstall the app on my android a couple days ago, but can't log on despite multiple attempts to reset my password. However, if i go to the link on an email from a guest correspondence i get into the app and it's fully usable without even needing my password

What is US 2 like from Kalispell to Libby? We took RT 2 back in 2010, nice ride but few services.  Stayed at pleasant Logan state park. Logging trucks numerous but well behaved. Saw moose and deer

I've toured extensively between the Canadian border and the ny/ma thruway corridor. Going north on the west side, rt 22 has a very good shoulder. After ticonderoga, i could give you a mix of state and quiet local roads to get you to the border if interested.

Gear Talk / Tent ground cloth?

Anyone had any luck using tyvek house wrap as a waterproof ground cloth for a tent?  Worried about the long term durability of its weave.

Gear Talk / Re: Advice for choosing components to reduce gear inches
« on: October 11, 2016, 08:31:59 pm »
I had the same situation with my Burley Hudson.  I replaced the 30 tooth chainring with a 24, and added a N-gear chain keeper to prevent the chain dropping off when coming down off the middle ring (it's a big jump).  Then I replaced the 30 tooth cassette with a 36.  You will need a long cage derailleur to take up all that slack chain, but even a 32 or 34 tooth cassette with that 24 tooth chainring will give you some pretty low gearing.  And relatively cheaply.

I agree with pat, saddle time is the key. And finding the right one.

did you look closely to see if the chain has a power-link that can be easily disconnected?

Wait for a day in Kansas when the winds are blowing out of the southeast (quite common mid-summer).  Tail wind + flat terrain = enjoyable century.
